DAVIES, JOHN PHILIP (1786 - 1832), Baptist minister, commentator, and divine limiting the power of the Atonement itself. Over the pseudonym Mab Dewi Ddu he took a prominent part in the Fullerian controversy in Seren Gomer, 1822-3. He published several articles and sermons in Seren Gomer (1818, 1822-3, 1824, 1825), together with a translation of a book by A. Fuller on revelation. After his death D. Rhys Stephen published his theological writings with a short memoir. J. P. Davies
CHARLES, HENRY (1778 - 1840), theologian, littérateur, and mathematician Seren Gomer. He was a versewright of the homely kind, and his versatility is shown by his skill as a mathematician. He died in 1840, aged 62, and was buried at Brawdy. His will, proved on 26 December 1840, contains bequests to Trefgarn Owen chapel and the London Missionary Society.
EDWARDS, ROBERT (Robin Ddu o Feirion; 1775 - 1805), poet and antiquary a native of Trawsfynydd, Meironnydd. Examples of his work are to be found in Corff y Gainc, 1810, namely his englyn, ' Cyffes y Bardd ' and ' Cywydd Marwnad Rowland Huw, bardd o'r Graienyn gerllaw'r Bala, 1802.' MORGAN, JOHN RHYS (Lleurwg; 1822 - 1900), Baptist minister, lecturer, poet, and littérateur eloquent speaker on the Liberal platform, but is probably best remembered for his popular lectures, of which at least thirty subjects have been recorded. In addition, he was an eisteddfod adjudicator, co-editor of Y Medelwr Ieuanc, which was first published in 1871, and editor of the poetry section of Seren Cymru from 1860 to 1877, and Seren Gomer in the early 1860's, but owing to his multiplicity of
RHYS, WILLIAM JOSEPH (1880 - 1967), minister (B) and author Gelli, Rhondda. He began taking an interest, it appears, in the history of his denomination when he was about fifty years old. For the 30 years following the publication in Seren Gomer (1934-35) of a histo ry of the Baptists at Landore, he wrote articles regularly for Seren Cymru, Trafodion Cymdeithas Hanes Bedyddwyr Cymru, and Seren Gomer, and supplied a chronicle of church events regularly to the
HILEY, FRANCIS (1781 - 1860), Baptist minister 1860. He incorporated eight churches. He was a mighty preacher and Christmas Evans said, on one occasion, that he would never preach after him. In the doctrinal discussions of the day he favoured the Higher Calvinism - a result of his sudden conversion - and in 1823 he published a booklet Golwg Ysgrythurol ar Iawn Crist, because the treatise in its original form had been rejected by Seren Gomer.
WILLIAMS, WILLIAM (Gwilym Twrog; 1768 - 1836), poet Born 22 November 1768 in the parish of Maentwrog, Merionethshire, and christened in Ffestiniog parish church. He wrote numerous englynion, cywyddau, awdlau, and hymns, many of which were published in Welsh periodicals - Seren Gomer, 1823-35, Y Dysgedydd, 1823-31, Y Gwyliedydd, 1824, Tywysog Cymru, 1832-3, Y Gwladgarwr, 1834-5. JONES, DANIEL (1771 - 1810), General Unitarian Free-communion Baptist minister a Calvinistic secession from Swansea Old Meeting, Jones soon developed anti-Calvinistic views which ultimately led him into Unitarianism. He took a leading part in the controversies of 1794-9 among West Wales Baptists, and seems to have been the ablest and also the fairest debater on the anti-Calvinist side. EDWARDS, JOHN (1799 - 1873?), musician also regarded as a good player on the clarinet. A hymn-tune which he composed earned for him a prize awarded by the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion. His first tune, ' Grongar,' appeared in Seren Gomer, 1824, other hymn-tunes by him being published in Haleliwia, Haleliwia Drachefn, Telyn Seion (Rosser Beynon), and Caniadau Seion (R. VALENTINE, LEWIS EDWARD (1893 - 1986), Baptist minister, author and Welsh nationalist to Belfast, and he was in Blackpool when the war came to an end. He kept a diary during the war, which he later used as the basis for recollections which were published in Seren Gomer in 1969-72 under the title 'Dyddiadur Milwr' (A soldier's diary). THOMAS, JOHN WILLIAM (Arfonwyson; 1805 - 1840), mathematician Geiriadur Cymreig a Seisonig, the undoing of which was his acceptance of the views of W. O. Pughe - views which Arfonwyson was to defend vigorously later on in Seren Gomer. In August 1834 the search for work took him to London, where he became a member of the Cymreigyddion Society and, in 1836 and 1837, its official 'bard.' WATKIN, WILLIAM RHYS (1875 - 1947), Baptist minister Moreia, Llanelli from 1910 until his death. He was the editor of Seren Gomer from 1921 to 1930, and from 1933 until 1947 (with John Gwili Jenkins for a year, and then with David Hopkins as co-editors). He was a notable administrator - he was President of his cymanfa, President of the Union of Welsh Baptists, 1939-40, and Chairman of the Baptist Missionary Society, 1944-45.
