John Ystumllyn is the earliest black person in Wales whose biography can be written. He was kidnapped as a boy in Africa, or possibly the West Indies, and brought up by the Wynn family of Ystumllyn, Cricieth, where he worked as a gardener. He learnt Welsh and English and became a respected member of the local community.
