PHYLIP family, poets Ardudwy manuscripts. Perhaps the most interesting of the miscellaneous poems are the cywyddau ymryson - poems written in bardic controversies, with his own brother, Rhisiart Phylip, for precedence at Nannau - with his uncle, Siôn Dafydd Siencyn, with Edmund Prys, with Thomas Prys of Plas Iolyn, and, most interesting of all, with Siôn Tudur of S. Asaph. Siôn Phylip was also associated with three other ymrysonau, viz
SION LEIAF Syr (fl. c. 1480), poet and cleric attributed in various other manuscripts to Dafydd ap Gwilym, and also to Robert Leiaf, a relative of Syr Siôn).
RHOBERT AP DAFYDD LLWYD (fl. c. 1550-1590), poet Sir William Gruffydd of Penrhyn), to Elis Prys of Plas Iolyn, and to Siôn Conwy. Gutun Tomas and he composed satires upon each other.
MORGAN, RHYS (c. 1700 - c. 1775), poet -house') in Blaen-gwrach; two persons bearing the name of Rees Morgan figure in the list of members in 1734, the one an elder and the other a deacon. But it is as a poet that he earned a name for himself in the annals of Glamorgan. He was, doubtless, trained in the bardic craft by one of the pupils of Edward Dafydd of Margam, but the man who probably influenced him most was Dafydd Lewys, Llanllawddog
BRWMFFILD, MATTHEW (fl. 1520-60), poet According to Cwrtmawr MS 12B (629), he was a native of Maelor. In his to 'Saint Tydecho and the two parishes of Mowthwy,' having equally praised Llan-ym-Mawddwy and Mallwyd, he asserts that he yearns more for the latter than the former. He wrote poems in praise of Rhisiart ap Rhys ap Dafydd Llwyd of Gogerddan 'about 1520'; of Rhys ap Howel of Porthamyl, Anglesey, 'within the month of November
MAREDUDD ap RHOSER (fl. c. 1530), poet who may have been a native of South Wales. No proof is available for connecting him, as Iolo Morganwg did, with Meisgyn (Miskin) in Glamorgan. Examples of his work exist in MSS., including a love poem, an awdl in praise of Ewyas, an elegy to Sir Charles Herbert, another to reconcile William Herbert of Colebrook with William Siôn ap Rhoser of Wern-ddu, and poems in praise of William Evans
HUW MACHNO (fl. 1585-1637), poet Son of Owen ap Ieuan ap Siôn of Penmachno, Caernarfonshire, descended from Dafydd Goch of Penmachno, an illegitimate son of David, prince of Wales. His mother was Margaret, daughter of Robert ap Rhys ap Hywel. The date of his birth is not known, but he is said to have died in 1637, and a gravestone inscribed ' H.M. obiit 1637,' in Penmachno churchyard, is believed to be his. He appears to have
RHYS GOCH GLYNDYFRDWY (fl. c. 1460), poet Like Guto'r Glyn he too sang the praises of the five sons of Llywelyn ab Hwlcyn of Anglesey, generous patrons of the bardic order. There were family ties between Llywelyn's descendants and the Pulestons, and Rhys Goch wrote an elegy on the death of John Puleston, heir of Emral. IEUAN ap GRUFFUDD LEIAF (fl. latter half of 15th century), poet A member of a Denbighshire family, son of Gruffudd Leiaf ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd Goch, and a descendant of Owain Gwynedd (Peniarth MS 127 (19)). Some examples of his work remain in manuscript, including cywyddau and awdlau to members of the Penrhyn and Nanconwy families, vaticinatory and religious poems, a poem on Aberconwy, a satire on the Llugwy river for hindering the poet
EVANS, WILLIAM (d. 1589/90), well-born cleric Born in the manor house at Llangattock-vibon-Avel (Llangatwg feibion Afel), Monmouthshire; according to Clark he was the eldest son of Ieuan (called by Dafydd Benwyn, 'Siôn') ap Thomas, who was descended from an illegitimate son of Sir William ap Thomas of Raglan, died 1469). IEUAN LLAFAR (fl. c. 1594-1610), poet A native apparently of Glyn Ceiriog, Denbighshire. Nothing is known about him, but a number of cywyddau and englynion composed by him, c. 1594 to 1610, have survived. He wrote poems to various contemporary North Wales gentry, including Owain Holant of Plas Berw, Anglesey, Hwmffrai ap Huw of Gwerclys, Rhobert Wyn of Foelas, Edwart ap Dafydd of Rhiwlas, Edwart ap Morus of Llansilin, Owain Bruwtwn
