THOMAS, JOHN (Siôn Wyn o Eifion; 1786 - 1859), poet Born at Chwilog, in the parish of Llanarmon, Caernarfonshire. His father was Thomas Roberts, brother of Siôn Lleyn (John Roberts, 1749 - 1817), poet. When Siôn Wyn was 9 years of age he met with an accident, being crushed between a cart and a wall near his home. The statement in Enwogion Cymru: a Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Welshmen that he hailed from Maenan, Caernarfonshire, suggests that he may be identified with Dafydd ab Owen, rector of Nannerch and Llanddoged, and vicar of Eglwysfach, 1537 (J. SIÔN ap HOWEL ab OWAIN (1550? - 1626/7), translator son of Howel ab Owain, Cefn Treflaeth, Llanystumdwy, Caernarfonshire, and Catherine, daughter of Rhisiart ap Dafydd of Cefn Llanfair. He was, therefore, a nephew of Huw ap Rhisiart ap Dafydd and a cousin of Richard Hughes. GRUFFUDD LEIAF (fl. 15th century), poet A native of Denbighshire, son of Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd Goch, who traced his descent from Owain Gwynedd. (Peniarth MS 127 (17)). An englyn written by him is found in Cwrtmawr MS 242B (1) and NLW MS 6499B (1). A cywydd to the owl is also attributed to him in some manuscripts, e.g. Cardiff MS. 64 (552), and Esgair MS. 1 (37); but the same poem bears the name of Dafydd ap Gwilym, and
DAFYDD COWPER (GOWPER) (fl. c. 1500), poet His poems are preserved in Peniarth MS 76, Peniarth MS 312, Llanstephan MS 118, Cardiff MS. 7, Cardiff MS. 49, B.M. Add. MS. 14997, and NLW MS 728D. Among them is a cywydd which John Puleston the elder ('Sion pilstwn hen') of Bersham caused to be written to John, abbot of Valle Crucis, and an englyn to the steeple of Wrexham church, 1507.

SION MOWDDWY (fl. c. 1575-1613), poet He sang the praises of the aristocracy throughout Wales, from Mostyn to Glamorgan. There were occasions when he spent a long time in Glamorgan. He indulged in flyting poetry with Meurug Dafydd of Llanishen concerning the rights of the strolling bards in Gwent and that neighbourhood, c. 1575-80, and he also had a poetic disputation with Llywelyn Siôn of Llangewydd.
