GWILYM RYFEL (fl. 12th century), poet All that remains of his work are two chains of englynion of intercession to Dafydd ab Owain Gwynedd. These belong to the period 1174-75 when David ruled over the greater part of Gwynedd, including Anglesey. HUGHES, DEWI ARWEL (1947 - 2017), Christian leader and theologian Dewi Arwel Hughes was born on 1 January 1947 at Bugeilfod, Llangwm, Denbighshire, the youngest of four children of Gruffudd Evans Hughes (1912-1975), agricultural merchant, and his wife Annie (née Edwards, 1908-1957), a seamstress. HYWEL ab EDWIN (d. 1044), king of Deheubarth son of Edwin ab Einion and great-grandson of Hywel Dda. When, in 1033, the usurper, Rhydderch ap Iestyn died, Hywel and his brother Maredudd, as senior heirs of Hywel Dda, became joint kings of Deheubarth. Maredudd's death in 1035 left Hywel sole ruler, and on him fell the brunt of defending the south against the Vikings and the northern usurper, Gruffudd ap Llywelyn. Expelled by Gruffudd in 1042
HYWEL ab EINION LLYGLIW (fl. 1330-1370), poet and uncle to Gruffudd Llwyd ap Dafydd ab Einion Llygliw. Nothing is known about him, but his love poem addressed to Myfanwy Fychan of Castell Dinas Bran, Llangollen, is preserved in NLW MS 1553A (275), NLW MS 4973B (369b), NLW MS 6209E (216), and published in The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales; for an English translation see T. HYWEL ap DAFYDD ap IEUAN ap RHYS (fl. c. 1450-1480) Raglan, poet HYWEL DAFI of Raglan, according to Peniarth MS 101 (262), a poet of whose work many examples remain in manuscript. These include a few religious and love poems, and a large number addressed in the standard convention to various members of the ruling families of his period in South Wales, e.g. Gruffudd ap Nicolas of Dynevor, Phylip ap Tomas of Llangoed in Brecknock, Rhys ap Siancyn of Glyn Nedd
HYWEL ap DAFYDD LLWYD ab Y GOF (fl. c. 1500), poet nothing is known of his life, but some examples of his work remain in manuscript, these being love poems and an elegy to the poet Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffudd.
HYWEL ap LLYWELYN ap MAREDUDD (fl. c. 1500?), poet A native of Cyfeiliog. Two examples of his work have been found in manuscript, these being elegies upon members of the landed families of Carno and Manafon, Montgomeryshire. A genealogical manuscript in the hand of Gruffudd Hiraethog (Peniarth MS 176) acknowledges a similar manuscript of Hywel's, but no existing example of the poet's genealogical work is known at present.
IAGO ab IDWAL ap MEURIG (d. 1039), king of Gwynedd a great grandson of Idwal Foel. After successive usurpations of legitimate authority in Gwynedd between 986 and 1033 (see Maredudd ap Owain, Llywelyn ap Seisyll, Rhydderch ap Iestyn) the old line was restored in the person of Iago. IEUAN ap BEDO GWYN (fl. c. 1530-1590?), poet and owner of the Llysyn estate, Llanerfyl, Montgomeryshire, before its purchase by the Herbert family; descendant of one of the younger branches of the family of Neuadd Wen (a neighbouring estate), and therefore of Maredudd, brother of Gruffudd ap Cynan. A little only of his work remains, and this includes a cywydd written to Dafydd ap Ieuan Llwyd of Nantmynach, in 1538.
IEUAN ap GRUFFUDD LEIAF (fl. latter half of 15th century), poet A member of a Denbighshire family, son of Gruffudd Leiaf ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd Goch, and a descendant of Owain Gwynedd (Peniarth MS 127 (19)). Some examples of his work remain in manuscript, including cywyddau and awdlau to members of the Penrhyn and Nanconwy families, vaticinatory and religious poems, a poem on Aberconwy, a satire on the Llugwy river for hindering the poet
IEUAN GETHIN ap IEUAN ap LLEISION (fl. c. 1450) Baglan, poet and gentleman A descendant of the family of Caradog ap Iestyn ap Gwrgant. According to some genealogists (e.g. Gruffudd Hiraethog in Peniarth MS 178, i (43)) he married the daughter of Tomas ab Ifor Hael. Bards from North and South Wales were entertained at his court at Baglan, and two cywyddau addressed to him remain in manuscript, one by Ieuan Ddu ap Dafydd ab Owain, and the other by Iorwerth Fynglwyd.
