LLYWARCH HEN (fl. 6th century), British prince and a hero of a cycle of Welsh tales dating from the mid-9th century pedigrees of the princes of Gwynedd as contained in the 'Life of Gruffudd ap Cynan.' According to these, Llywarch was descended from Coel Gotebauc, his father was Elidyr Lledanwyn, and his mother was Gwawr, daughter of Brachan. LLYWELYN ap GUTUN (fl. c. 1480), poet A number of his poems remain in MSS., including an elegy composed to his son Gruffudd, 'begging' poems requesting a dog, some goats, and spectacles, a satire or lampoon addressed to the dean of Bangor (who had instructed Huw Lewis, Y Chwaen, to imprison the poet, rather than allow him to make a 'begging' journey or cymortha in Bodeon and Aberdaron), and another satire to dean Richard Kyffin, Rhys
LLYWELYN ap HYWEL ap IEUAN ap GRONW (fl. c. 1480?), poet concerning whom no details are available. Some examples of his work remain in MSS., including a number of religious poems, an elegy to Tomas ap Gruffudd of Abermarlais, and a 'begging' poem.
LLYWELYN ap MOEL Y PANTRI (d. 1440) Llanwnnog, poet 16B, NLW MS 1553A, NLW MS 6681B, NLW MS 8330B. They include poems to Watcyn Fychan of Hergest, Dafydd Llwyd Fychan of Hafod Wen, Gruffudd ap Meredudd of Aberriw, Edward ap Hywel ab Ieuan Llwyd, etc.
LLYWELYN ap SEISYLL (d. 1023), king of Deheubarth and Gwynedd ambition. Such a man was Llywelyn, and by his defeat of the usurper, Aeddan ap Blegywryd, in 1018, and of Rhain, an Irish pretender, in 1022, he became master of the south. He also extended his rule for a few years over a large part of Wales, a memorable period in Welsh annals judging from entries in the chronicle. LLYWELYN BRYDYDD HODDNANT (fl. c. 1300-1350), poet Iolo Morganwg connected him with Glamorgan, but the fact is that there are rivers in Radnorshire and Pembrokeshire called Hoddnant, in addition to that near Llantwit Major in Glamorgan. Two examples of his work are preserved in the Hendregadredd MS. and some other MSS., these being two awdlau addressed to Ieuan ap Gruffudd Foel of the Aeron valley in Cardiganshire.
LLYWELYN FARDD (fl. c. 1150-1175), poet Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn a prince who was alive as late as 1274.
LLYWELYN GOCH ap MEURIG HEN (fl. c. 1360-1390), poet One of the last of the 'Gogynfeirdd,' and a native of Merioneth. A large number of his poems are preserved in MSS., including a religious poem, poems addressed to Dafydd ap Cadwaladr of Bachelldref, Goronwy ap Tudur of Penmynydd, and to the South Walians - Hopcyn ap Tomas of Ynys Dawy, Llywelyn Fychan and his brother Rhydderch, and Rhys ap Gruffudd ab Ednyfed. MAB Y CLOCHYDDYN (fl. c. 1380), poet He is reputed to have been a native of Llanafan-fawr, Brecknock. Two examples of his work are found in the 'Red Book of Hergest' and a number of other manuscripts. They are an elegy to Gwenhwyfar, daughter of Madog and wife of Hywel ap Tudur ap Gruffudd of Anglesey, and two englynion.
MADOG BENFRAS (fl. c. 1320-1360), poet of Marchwiail, Denbighshire. His pedigree is given in Powys Fadog thus: ' Madog Benfras ap Gruffudd ap Iorwerth, arglwydd Sonlli, ab Einion Goch ab Ieuaf ap Llywarch ap Ieuaf ap Niniaw ap Cynfrig ap Rhiwallawn.' His two brothers, Llywelyn Llogell (parish priest of Marchwiail), and Ednyfed, were also poets; according to Iolo Morganwg their bardic teacher was Llywelyn ap Gwilym of Emlyn. Iolo also
MADOG DWYGRAIG (fl. c. 1370), poet one of the last of the 'Gogynfeirdd' group. A number of his awdlau remain in the ' Red Book of Hergest ' and other MSS. They include religious and satirical poems, and also ones addressed to Hopcyn ap Thomas ab Einion of Ynys Dawy, Gruffudd ap Madog of Llechwedd Ystrad, and Morgan Dafydd ap Llywarch of Ystrad Tywi.
