Born 19 April 1818 at Bangor, son of the Rev. Dafydd Roberts, a Calvinistic Methodist preacher and superintendent of one of Charles of Bala's schools; his mother was of the same lineage as John Jones of Tal-y-sarn and Cadwaladr
