PUGHE, WILLIAM OWEN (1759 - 1835), lexicographer, grammarian, editor, antiquary, and poet Born in Llanfihangel-y-pennant, Meironnydd, 7 August 1759, the son of John Owen of Rhiwywerfa near Abergynolwyn and his wife Anne Owen. The family moved shortly afterwards to the farmhouse of Egryn in Ardudwy. He claimed that in his youth he had heard Ardudwy singers in his home and had seen companies playing interludes, but what influenced him most was the reading of Gorchestion Beirdd Cymru
PULESTON family Emral, Plas-ym-mers, Hafod-y-wern, Llwynycnotiau, John Edwards the younger of Chirk (see Edwards or Edwardes of Chirkland, Pembrokeshire, and Kensington) defeated William Almer (see Almer or Almor of Pant Iocyn) of Pant Iocyn. Almer alleged connivance on the part of the sheriff, Owen Brereton, and in an action which he subsequently brought in Star Chamber he charged Brereton and several of Edwards's supporters, including Puleston, with having
REES, DAVID (1801 - 1869), Congregational minister, and editor , David Owen (Brutus), in Yr Haul. Brutus attacked and made light of the influence of Nonconformity but David Rees defended its foundations and its principles. Through the medium of Y Diwygiwr he succeeded in bringing into being a new outlook on radical Nonconformity. He retired from the editorship of Y Diwygiwr in 1865 and from the ministry in 1868. He died 31 March 1869.
REES, EBENEZER (1848 - 1908), printer and publisher opened a printing works in Ystalyfera. He established a new weekly newspaper, Y Gwladwr Cymreig in 1885. The first edition appeared on 22 January but it terminated on 24 September of the same year. D. Onllwyn Brace, Ystalyfera, J. Dyfrig Owen, Glantwrch and J.T. REES, HENRY (1798 - 1869), most famous minister among the Calvinistic Methodists in his day regularly with but few exceptions at Association meetings to the end of his life. He made an intense study of the work of Puritan divines, especially Dr. John Owen. He was ordained at Bala in June 1827. He married Mary Roberts, of Shrewsbury, 20 October 1830, and had four children of whom three died in infancy; the fourth, Ann, grew up and married Richard Davies (1818 - 1896). He moved to Liverpool at
REES, JOHN SEYMOUR (1887 - 1963), minister (Congl.) and author , especially of Neuaddlwyd Academy. He also compiled indexes to Y Beirniad and the biographical dictionary of Josiah T. Jones (1867). He married, January 1924, Annie Owen, Dyffryn, Rhydlewis, Cardiganshire, who also gave valuable service to the church, and they had one son. He died 17 June 1963.
REES, JOSIAH (1744 - 1804), Unitarian minister Born 2 October 1744 in Llanfair-ar-y-bryn parish, Carmarthenshire - his father, Owen Rees (1717 - 1768), was at the time pastor of Clun-pentan. Josiah was at Swansea grammar school and afterwards at Carmarthen Academy (1761-6, under Jenkin Jenkins), where he became very friendly with David Davis of Castellhywel. REES, OWEN (1717 - 1768), Independent minister Born in 1717 in the Cefn-arthen district, near Llandovery. When Cefn-arthen congregation was rent by theological differences, the Calvinistic party formed a church (incorporated by Edmund Jones in 1740) at Clun-pentan; Owen Rees was one of its members. He knew Evan Jones (Ieuan Gwynedd) and published a biography of that writer, 1876. He arranged for the publication of Cysondeb y Pedair Efengyl (E.
