JONES, RICHARD
(1771? - 1833), Calvinistic Methodist minister and writer
in any man-made dogma, and composed two catechisms on the Bible, one elementary and one advanced. Several of his articles are to be found in
Seren
Gomer, Goleuad Cymru, and Y Drysorfa, under the pseudonym ' Cymro Gwyllt.' About 1815, when the painful controversy about Redemption and Atonement was at its height, and when his old friend, John Elias, was walking very near the edge of the precipice
JONES, THOMAS
(1860 - 1932), farmer and poet
published Caneuon, 1902; Beirdd Uwchaled [an anthology of the poets of that region], 1930; and Pitar Paw, 1932. He wrote the life of John Jones of Glan-y-gors for the 2nd imp. of
Seren
Tan Gwmwl, 1923, and some of his writings are to be found in Cymru (O.M.E.), Gen., Yr Haul, etc. He was an authority on setting penillion to the accompaniment of the harp.
JONES, THOMAS LLOYD
(Gwenffrwd; 1810 - 1834), poet
August 1834. It was from Philadelphia that he sent the poem ' Syniadau ar y Môr ' which was published in
Seren
Gomer, August 1833. He sent a poem (which did not win a prize) in memory of his patron Archdeacon Beynon to the Gwent and Dyfed royal eisteddfod at Cardiff 1834, but he died four days before the eisteddfod opened.
JONES, TOM ELLIS
(1900 - 1975), Baptist minister and college Principal
literature of his denomination. He served for many years as editor of the Welsh Baptist weekly,
Seren
Cymru, and assisted the aged Reverend E. Cefni Jones when he was editing the Welsh Baptist hymnbook, Llawlyfr Moliant Newydd, which was published in 1956. LEEKE, SAMUEL JAMES
(1888 - 1966), Baptist minister
1929 he played a prominent part, with others, in the founding of Urdd y
Seren
Fore for the children of the denomination. He served that movement in more than one post including its presidency in the year 1939-40. He was also prominent as a member of the first committee and a lecturer at Ilston School, a preparatory school for theological students that was opened in Swansea on 8 Sep. 1934. He was the
LEWIS, BENJAMIN WALDO
(1877 - 1953), Baptist minister
at the Presbyterian College during the illness of J. Oliver Stephens in 1928-29. He contributed extensively to the literature of the Baptist denomination, e.g. a series of articles on the Baptists among the other denominations in
Seren
Cymru 1930, and between 1911 and 1937 intermittent lessons for the syllabus of the Sunday school for Yr Hauwr and Yr Arweinydd Newydd. He was elevated to become
LEWIS, DAVID WYRE
(1872 - 1966), minister and administrator (B)
organizer in Wales for the Reorganizing Fund (Trysorfa Ad-drefniad; 1944). He was a prolific writer and published a short memoir in J.T. Rees (ed.), Detholiad o donau, anthemau a rhanganau Dafydd Lewis, Llanrhystud (1930), and Yr eglwysi a'r Undeb. Y weinidogaeth a'i pherigl heddiw (1939). He was at the forefront in the revival of
Seren
Gomer in 1909, was editor of the periodical, 1910-16, laying special
LLEWELLYN, THOMAS
(1720? - 1783), Baptist minister and tutor
University of Aberdeen. He is best remembered for his efforts to secure for his fellow-countrymen a constant supply and distribution of Welsh Bibles. He published Historical Account of the British or Welsh Versions and Editions of the Bible, 1768, translated into Welsh in
Seren
Gomer, 1815, and Historical and Critical Remarks on the British Tongue, 1769 (both reprinted together in 1793 under the title of
LLOYD, GRIFFITH RICHARD MAETHLU
(1902 - 1995), college principal and minsister (B)
and history, and during ecumenical discussions in the 1960s he argued strongly in favour preserving Baptist identity and order. His publications are few - mostly addresses and the occasional essay in
Seren
Gomer - but all testify to a penetrating, analytical mind. He outlived his wife by two years and died on 6 March, 1995, and he was buried in the graveyard of Pencarneddi chapel in Anglesey.
LLOYD, JOHN
(Einion Môn; 1792 - 1834), schoolmaster and poet
that Society; and when clerics in Wales attacked the society, Lloyd, in 1829, composed a reply to these ' brainless chatterers ' as he called them. The reports of Cymreigyddion meetings, in
Seren
Gomer, show that he also lectured to the society. But in 1832 we find him, in company with Griffith Davies, F.R.S., protesting vigorously against the increasingly Radical tone of the society - see the debate
LLOYD, SIMON
(1756 - 1836), Methodist cleric
(see T. M. Jones, Llenyddiaeth fy Ngwlad, 76) edited the third series of Y Drysorfa. He married (1789) Bridget Price of Rhydcolomennod (Llangrannog, Cardiganshire), and they had eight children. He took considerable interest in improved methods of farming. The family estates remained in the possession of his descendants till very lately - see the list of Plas-yn-dre properties in Y

LLWYD, STEPHEN
(1794 - 1854), musician
became precentor of Carmel Baptist chapel; he also conducted music classes in the district. His hymn-tune 'Caerllyngoed,' first appeared in
Seren
Gomer, June 1822; other hymn-tunes composed by him ('Abergwaun,' 'Taf,' and 'Rhondda') were published in
Seren
Gomer whilst a 'Carol Nadolig,' arranged by D. Emlyn Evans, appeared in Cronicl y Cerddor, December 1882. He died in April 1854, at the age of 60
