ROBERTS, IEUAN WYN PRITCHARD (1930 - 2013), journalist and politician
ROBERTS, THOMAS (Scorpion; 1816 - 1887), Independent minister Bala, and he used to go as far afield as Rhyd-y-main to hold classes in literature. In November 1848 an article of his published in Y Dysgedydd under the title 'Ocheneidiau'r Weinidogaeth' ('The Groans of the Ministry') caused an uproar throughout the country. He was ferociously attacked and, if possible, even more ferociously defended by his former co-student, Ieuan Gwynedd. Scorpion, like other
ROBERTS, THOMAS (1884 - 1960), educationalist and scholar the Normal College, Bangor, and was vice-principal from 1920 till his retirement in 1949. As a scholar Thomas Roberts was interested in the works of the poets of the gentry throughout his life. ROBERTS, WILLIAM JOHN (Gwilym Cowlyd; 1828 - 1904), poet, printer, bookseller, bibliophile, and eccentric Born at Trefriw, Caernarfonshire in 1828, the son of John Roberts, Tyddyn Gwilym. He was a nephew of Ieuan Glan Geirionydd. He founded the Gorsedd of Geirionydd (1863), in opposition to the established Gorsedd of the Bards, which he denounced as heretical. ROBERTS, WILLIAM MORGAN (1853 - 1923), musician D. Emlyn Evans, and he became responsible for the music pieces that were issued with that journal. He acted as secretary of the eisteddfodau held at Liverpool, 1884, and Wrexham, 1888. He contributed articles to Y Cerddor and produced Welsh versions of some of the works of the masters. SALUSBURY family Rug, Bachymbyd, This family was founded at Bachymbyd, between Ruthin and Denbigh, at the close of the 15th century by JOHN SALUSBURY, fourth son of Thomas Salusbury of Lleweni (died 1471). It acquired Rug by the marriage of John's eldest son PIERS SALUSBURY to Margaret Wen, daughter and heiress of Ieuan ap Hywel ap Rhys, lord of Rug, near Corwen, Meironnydd. SION LEIAF Syr (fl. c. 1480), poet and cleric Son of Ieuan ap Gruffudd Leiaf of Denbighshire, and a descendant of Owain Gwynedd (Peniarth MS 127 (20)). No details regarding his life are known, but a number of his poems remain in manuscript. These include two religious poems, one being a confession and the other a poem on the vernicle, a poem in praise of Richard Kyffin, dean of Bangor, a love poem, and another to the owl. SULIEN (1011 - 1091), teacher and Bishop of St David's again from 1080 to 1085, being succeeded by Wilfrid, the last independent bishop of S. Davids. Sulien died in 1091, aged 80, renowned for his wisdom and scholarly attainments. He personally guided the education of his four sons, Rhygyfarch, ARTHEN, DANIEL, and IEUAN, and the literary importance and influence of what may be called the school of Sulien is well marked.
