ROBERTS, JOHN (Jack Russia; 1899 - 1979), miner, councillor and a prominent member of the Welsh Communist Party Born 1 May 1899 in Penrhyndeudraeth, Meirionethshire, the son of John Roberts, a miner and Mary Jones, daughter of a blacksmith from Harlech. He was brought up by his grandparents in Penrhyndeudraeth and received his education in the local schools. ROBERTS, JOHN ASKEW (1826 - 1884), antiquary, journalist, and author collaborated in bringing out the 1878 edition of Sir John Wynn's The history of the Gwydir family. He also published Contributions to Oswestry History, 1881; Wynnstay and the Wynns, 1876; and, a work which had a very large circulation - The Gossiping Guide to Wales. ROBERTS, JOHN JOHN (Iolo Caernarfon; 1840 - 1914), Calvinistic Methodist minister, poet, and prose-writer Born at Tir-bach, Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire, son of a John Roberts who had moved to that district in 1824 from Amlwch, on the decline of the Parys Mountain copper works. He had very little early schooling, and when quite young worked with his father in the Nantlle slate quarries.
