Born 2 December 1884 in Birmingham, son of
Arthur
James Cox and his wife Mary. He was educated at Edward VI Grammar School, Birmingham, and then at Birmingham University where he graduated B.Sc. in 1904 and M.Sc. 1905, and subsequently gained the degrees of Ph.D. Strasburg and D.Sc. Birmingham. He was a F.G.S. and was awarded the Lyell Medal of the Geological Society in 1948. He began his career

Thomas Roberts, minister of Jerusalem chapel (Calvinistic Methodists), and his wife Winifred, herself the child of a Methodist minister, the Rev. Rees Jones (Brynmenai, y Felinheli). He was sent, for a secondary education, to the Salop School, Oswestry, a non-denominational boarding school
