Thomas was born 2 May 1912, in Menai Bridge, Anglesey, the youngest of the five sons of Reverend W. Keinion Thomas and his wife Jeanette; Gwyn, Alon, Iwan and Jac were his brothers and they had a younger sister, Truda. He lived at Aeddren, a farm near Llangwm Dinmael, Denbighshire. Llangwm and Dinmael are mentioned in his poems. The variant readings of the name of his home are numerous, e.g. Aerddrem, Aurdrem, Eurdrem, Oerddrym. He is said to have lived at or inherited the farm of Coed y Bedo, near Aeddren.
