This family, settled in Rhufoniog for several centuries, claimed descent from Marchweithian. There are alabaster effigies of RHYS AP MEREDYDD, also called RHYS FAWR, of Plas Iolyn, standard-bearer in the battle of Bosworth Field, and of his wife Lowry, in Ysbyty

called Difrifol Ystyriaeth, published by John Daniel (Carmarthen, 1789). He was known also as a grammarian. He died in October 1795 while crossing the mountains from Ffestiniog to Ysbyty

Two cywyddau by him survive in which he engages in mock controversy with Ieuan (
Ifan
) Dylyniwr, harpist; he also wrote an englyn urging the bards who came to Bodwrda to write to the 'Worthyes' on the partition in the Tŷ Canol at Bodwrda. It is fairly certain that he kept a family bard and a family harpist at his home. From the elegy upon him, composed by Wiliam Llŷn it would appear that he was

The eldest son of Elis Prys, of Plas Iolyn, Denbighshire. His date of birth is not known, but he was buried at Ysbyty

, 23 August 1634, and according to his poems he had reached old age when he died. He was born at the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth, and he was engaged in the wars and expeditions of her age. He was twice married (1) to Margaret, daughter of William Griffith of Caernarvon

Son of William and Gwenllian Bevan, born at Llangynwyd, Glamorganshire. Coming from a poor family, he was not taught any specific trade and began working as a casual farm labourer. When he was about 22-24 years of age he moved to Ystradfellte, Brecknock, where he married Ann, daughter of Thomas David
