He was educated at Cwrtnewydd school and Dafydd Evans's school Cribyn (1901-02); he was apprenticed as a pupil-teacher and, for a period of ten years he was a deputy-teacher at Blaenau school, Gorsgoch and Cwrtnewydd school.
