in the Dictionarium Duplex calling him Aneurin, and this form of the name has continued to the present day, although without justification. Nor is there foundation whatsoever for the opinion advanced by some that Aneirin, from being (incorrectly) written Aneurin (eurin = 'golden'), corresponds to the Gildas who scourged the

Anian acted in close accord with him. He was an arbitrator for the prince under the agreement concluded with the earl of Gloucester in Cantref Selyf in Brecknock on 27 September 1268. He joined the bishop of St Asaph in negotiating a settlement between Llywelyn and his brother

career. At the time of his elevation, the diocese was, as the outcome of the treaty of Montgomery, entirely dominated by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd. Prince and bishop were, at first, on amicable terms.
