WINTER, CHARLES
(1700 - 1773), Arminian Baptist minister
Son of Francis Winter, a well-to-do farmer of Bedwellty, Glamorganshire, was apprenticed to a surgeon-apothecary at Newport, Monmouth, but returned home, joined the Baptist church at Hengoed, began preaching, and entered Carmarthen Academy under Perrott. He was there led to accept Arminian doctrines. Others at Hengoed tended to the same way, notably Rees

and Jacob Isaac. After a heated
WOODING, DAVID LEWIS
(1828 - 1891), genealogist, historian, bibliophile and shopkeeper
to develop what had already become his life-long interest. He was contemporary of
David
Lloyd Isaac, vicar of Llangamarch and author, eventually purchasing all of his MS works and notes. He was nominated by Egerton G.B. Phillimore and became a member of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion. Wooding corresponded with Morris Davies of Bangor, a noted hymnologist and musician, and he became a

family Bodewryd,
of the latter, was ringild of Lliwon in 1451, and was alive in 1467. His son, RHYS, was living in Llechgynfarwy in 1497, and married Agnes, daughter of Nicholas ab Ellis, archdeacon of Anglesey and rector of Llaneilian. Rhys was alive in 1510. His son,

AP RHYS AP LLEWELYN, was one of the pillars of society in Anglesey in the first half of the 16th century. It was he, in 1521, who purchased
WYNN
family Wynnstay,
boast of his friendship with people like Sir Joshua Reynolds, the artist, and

Garrick, the actor. He contributed generously to the Welsh school in London and started two schools of his own in the parish of Ruabon; he was the second ' Chief President ' of the Cymmrodorion Society (Cymm., 1951, 56-7). In the course of his childhood, his mother added to the extent of the Wynnstay property by
WYNN, GRIFFITH
(1669? - 1736), cleric and translator
Born c. 1669, son of Griffith Wynn, Mallwyd - he was 20 years old when he matriculated, 2 July 1689, at Oxford, as from Oriel College (he graduated in 1693). He is remembered as the translator into Welsh of a work by Jeremy Taylor, Contemplations of the state of man in this life and in that which is to come, which was published at Chester by Roger

Wynne was born at Nantmoch Uchaf farm, Penderyn, Breconshire, on 2 June 1900, the son of Philip Thomas (born 1872) and his wife Elizabeth (née Thomas, born 1877). He was christened

William Thomas, and later adopted the name

Wynne for his musical career. In 1901 the family moved to Llanfabon, Glamorgan, where his father found work in the Albion colliery in Cilfynydd.
