WILLIAMS, LLYWELYN
(1911 - 1965), minister (Congl.) and politician
College of Swansea with a scholarship and graduated in Welsh and philosophy in 1933. After a theological course at the Presbyterian College in Carmarthen, he was ordained minister in Bethesda, Caernarfonshire, in 1936. He left in

for the Tabernacl, Abertillery, and within three years was called to succeed Howell Elvet Lewis at Tabernacl, King's Cross, London. In 1950 he was elected M.P. for
WILLIAMS, STEPHEN JOSEPH
(1896 - 1992), Welsh scholar
prominent in attempts to ensure that Welsh was flexible enough to be able to adapt to twentieth-century demands (his article on 'Y Gymraeg a'r dyfodol' appeared in the Cymmrodorion Society Transactions

), though the proposals known as 'Cymraeg Byw' were generally misunderstood (see his robust article in Y Faner, 1981). He served on the University of Wales Welsh Terminology panel and he was consulting
WILLIAMS, WALDO GORONWY
(1904 - 1971), poet and pacifist
his occupation of teaching. Concerned about his future employment in Pembrokeshire Waldo had already applied successfully for a post at Botwnnog County School in Llŷn. He began to work there on 1 March. His wife's health deteriorated after the move and she died from the effects of tuberculosis on 1 June

(1878 - 1952), H.M. Inspector of Schools and Director of the Council of Social Service for Wales and Monmouthshire
the Arts Council of Great Britain, the Welsh Committee of the British Council, the Welsh Committee of UNESCO and the B.B.C. Appeals Committee (Wales). He was also a director of the Welsh National Opera and a vice-president of Coleg Harlech, 1948-52. In

WILLIAMS, WILLIAM NANTLAIS
(1874 - 1959), minister (Presb.), editor, poet and hymn writer
schoolroom was built at Pantyffynnon in 1904, and another in Tir-y-dail in 1906 (a church was established there in 1911; see W.N. Williams, Y Deugain Mlynedd Hyn (Ammanford, 1921)). A beautiful new chapel was built at Bethany in 1930. Nantlais was elevated to the chair of the South Wales Association (

WILLIS, ALBERT CHARLES
(1876 - 1954), president of the Australian Labour Party
served until 1933. In 1931 he was appointed Agent General for New South Wales, a position based in London, but he returned to Australia when his term of office came to an end the following year. In
