POPKIN, JOHN (fl. 1759-1824), Methodist and Sandemanian exhorter Dynol yn nghylch Ffydd, 1797; Llythyr oddi wrth John Popkin at y Parch. David Jones … yngylch Natur Crefydd, 1801. In 1812 he published a book attacking the bishop of S. Davids, Traethawd yn nghylch Natur 'Ty Dduw' neu 'Eglwys Crist,' and another similar one in 1813. [In 1816 he published Caniadau Cristionogol, a collection of his hymns.] Later on, two English books appeared: Further Remarks on the
POWEL, CHARLES (1712 - 1796), antiquarian the last in the male line of descent of the Powels of Castlemadoc, Brecknock, and ultimately descending from William Powel, a Welsh poet who flourished c. 1580-1620. He was an antiquarian of more than usual merit, and corresponded with many of the leading antiquarians of his day. POWELL family Nanteos, Llechwedd-dyrus, This family claims descent from Edwin ap Gronow of Tegeingl. Dafydd ap Philip ap Hywel is said to have been the first 'ap Hywel (whence Powell) connected with Llechwedd-dyrus, the first seat of the family; his wife, according to Peniarth MS 156 (see West Wales Historical Records, i), was daughter of John ap Edward of Nanteos. POWELL, DAVID (d. 1781), Franciscan friar ) was Allwydd y Nef. O gasgliad D.P. Off., an adaptation of Allwydd Paradwys (1670) by John Hughes (1615 - 1686). Powell's editor, John Fisher, shows that Powell's Welsh is much better than that of Allwydd Paradwys.
POWELL, GRIFFITH (1561 - 1620), principal of Jesus College, Oxford Born 1561, son of John ap Hywel, Llansawel, Carmarthenshire. He matriculated at Jesus College in 1581, and graduated M.A. in 1589; he proceeded to the degree of D.C.L. in 1599. Powell was elected a Fellow of the college in 1589, and he became principal in 1613. His published work comprises two volumes on Aristotelian philosophy, which appeared in 1594 and 1598. POWELL, HOWELL (d. 1716), Congregational minister Congregational Board proves that he was a man with a special aptitude for the ministry; grants of £5 a year were made to him by the Board in 1697, 1699, 1702, 1703, and 1704. He returned to Brecknock in 1700 and was ordained as minister of Beiliheulog church, which became the spiritual centre of the district. He died 23 March 1875. A biography of him, by Thomas Levi, was published in New York.

POWELL, RAYMOND (1928 - 2001), Labour politician at this time. (In the event, Roy Hughes, the Labour MP for Newport East, obliged and went to the House of Lords.) At the time of his death Sir Ray Powell was the oldest Welsh Labour MP and firmly identified as belonging to 'Old Labour' - a member of the old school in the age of 'New Labour'.
