Rhys Jones was born in Ystradgynlais, Breconshire, on 19 June 1916, the eldest of the three sons of Evan Thomas Jones (1879-1948), a miner who later became an insurance collector, and his wife Elizabeth (Bessie) Jones (née Rees, 1884-1962), a milliner. JONES, THOMAS LLOYD (Gwenffrwd; 1810 - 1834), poet Jones (1802 - 1851), a solicitor whose office was in Chapel Street, Holywell. From an early age he wrote poetry (his Welsh translation of ' Hymn of the Seasons ' (Thompson won a prize at the Trelawnyd eisteddfod in 1829), and contributed verse to the periodicals.
