HERBERT, EDWARD
(1583 - 1648), 1st baron Herbert of Cherbury
between Renaissance thought and that of the modern age, and his writings on religion point the way to deism and to the
liberal
theology of a later period. His Life informs us that he could speak Welsh.
HEYCOCK, LLEWELLYN
(LORD HEYCOCK OF TAIBACH), (1905 - 1990), prominent leader in local government in Glamorganshire
when he received an honorary Doctorate in Law. He was the most important architect in the battle to uphold the unity and continuance of the University of Wales in the crisis of 1964. His ambition by the 1950s was to follow W. G. Cove as the Labour
MP
for Aberavon. He was already on the Parliamentary Panel of the NUR, and when the opportunity came in 1957 he won 39 nominations compared with 3 for the
HOLLAND, SAMUEL
(1803 - 1892), a pioneer of the North Wales slate industry and chief promoter of the establishment of Dr. Williams's school for girls at Dolgelley
School, Dolgelley. Holland represented Merioneth in Parliament (as a
Liberal
) from 1870 to 1885. He lived for years at Plas Penrhyn, near Penrhyndeudraeth and, for some years before his death, at Caer-deon, between Barmouth and Dolgelley. He died 27 December 1892; his widow Caroline Jane (née Burt) died in 1924.
HOOSON, HUGH EMLYN

He was born on 16 March 1933, the son of David Maelor Hooson, a farmer, and his wife, Ursula Ellis Hooson. He was a cousin to Emlyn Hooson (born 1925), the former

for Montgomeryshire, 1962-79, and a grand-nephew to Thomas Edward Ellis (1859-1899), the
Liberal
MP
for Merionethshire, 1886-99, and to the Welsh poet I. D. Hooson (1880-1948). He was educated at Rhyl Grammar School and
HOWELLS, GEORGE
(1871 - 1955), principal of Serampore College, India
for a quarter of a century. He reestablished the college on the
liberal
foundations of William Carey, and preserved his highest ideals. From 1913 to 1929 he was a Fellow and examiner of the University of Calcutta, and in 1918 he was a member of the Bengal Legislative Council. He returned in 1932, and was lecturer in Hebrew at Rawdon Baptist College until his retirement in 1935. He died 7 November

HUGHES GRIFFITHS, ANNIE JANE
(1873 - 1942), peace campaigner

and county magistrate, moderator of his presbytery, president of the Wrexham

HUGHES, JOHN JAMES

Herald Cymraeg at Caernarvon, where he soon won a reputation as a trenchant writer on the

side. He took a prominent part in the campaign for the appointment of county court judges with a knowledge of Welsh, and worked for the reform of the national eisteddfod and the 'Gorsedd.' He died 8 January 1875, and was buried in Glanadda cemetery, Bangor. Short as his career was, he impressed his
