Born 5 January 1843 at Tal-y-sarn, Caernarfonshire, son of the celebrated

Jones (1796 - 1857). He was educated at the local British school, at Clynnog school, 1860, Bala College, 1861, and Edinburgh University, 1865-9 (M.A., 1869). His only education was gained from the curate of Aberystruth, Howel Prosser. He began preaching in 1722, assisted the minister at Penmaen, and was ordained there in
