SIÔN ap HOWEL ab OWAIN (1550? - 1626/7), translator son of Howel ab Owain, Cefn Treflaeth, Llanystumdwy, Caernarfonshire, and Catherine, daughter of Rhisiart ap Dafydd of Cefn Llanfair. He was, therefore, a nephew of Huw ap Rhisiart ap Dafydd and a cousin of Richard Hughes. At his father's death in 1583 he became head of the family at Cefn Treflaeth, and he was one of those prosecuted by the Earl of Leicester during the troubles relating to

SION BRWYNOG (d. 1567?), poet Son of William ap Llywelyn ap Iorwerth. He lived at Brwynog, in the parish of Llanfflewyn, Anglesey, from which farm he took his surname. He belonged to the lesser squirearchy and, as a strolling poet, had wandered over many parts of the country, writing poems for the aristocracy of Anglesey, Caernarvonshire, Denbighshire, Flintshire, and Merioneth. SION CENT (1367? - 1430?), poet Practically nothing is known about his life. It may be confidently asserted that his name was Siôn Cent although he has been called Siôn Gwent (e.g. by Gruffydd Robert), Siôn y Cent, and Siôn Kemp(t). SION LEIAF Syr (fl. c. 1480), poet and cleric Son of Ieuan ap Gruffudd Leiaf of Denbighshire, and a descendant of Owain Gwynedd (Peniarth MS 127 (20)). No details regarding his life are known, but a number of his poems remain in manuscript. These include two religious poems, one being a confession and the other a poem on the vernicle, a poem in praise of Richard Kyffin, dean of Bangor, a love poem, and another to the owl. SMYTH, ROGER (1541 - 1625), Roman Catholic priest and Welsh translator students, against the English (see under Clynnog, Morys). The English won, and Smyth was dismissed from the college because he refused to express his readiness to be ordained priest, and to return to England as a missionary.
