(fl. c. 1500-1530?), a poet
His only extant work is his bardic controversy (ymryson) with Gruffydd ap Ieuan ap Rhys Llwyd. It contains a poem addressed to Gruffydd by
Dafydd
, a poem in reply by Gruffydd, and another by
Dafydd
. This controversy is to be found in the following manuscripts - Cardiff 7, Mostyn 143, NLW MS 5269B, Peniarth MS 112 Peniarth MS 152; and parts of it in NLW MS 728D and Peniarth MS 78.
DAFYDD BENFRAS
(fl. 1230-1260), poet
His father's name was Llywarch, and his home was in Anglesey. He wrote eulogies to Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, and an elegy upon his death in 1240. Gruffydd ap Llywelyn (1244) and
Dafydd
ap Llywelyn (1246) were also the subjects of elegies by
Dafydd
Benfras. Soon after Llywelyn ap Gruffydd had started on his campaign against his brother Owain in 1255 and against the English of the Middle Country in

, says that he was from Llangeinor. His bardic teacher was Rhisiart Iorwerth (Rhisiart Fynglwyd,), Llangynwyd, son of Iorwerth Fynglwyd. Some of his work, in his autograph, is in Cardiff MS. 10 and Llanstephan MS 164, and there are extant two large collections of his awdlau and cywyddau, the one in Cardiff MS. 2 (277) and the other in Jes. pilstwn hen') of Bersham caused to be written to John, abbot of Valle Crucis, and an englyn to the steeple of Wrexham church, 1507.
