Born at Llandwrog, 26 December 1825, son of Richard

(Callestr Fardd). Father and son both joined the local Cymreigyddion and the Wesleyans at Bethesda. He had very little early schooling but managed to educate himself. He began to preach at Corris and then went for a time to the Normal College at Swansea. He was a minister in the following circuits: Mold (1854), Abergele (1856), Llanfyllin
