GRUFFYDD, ELIS (fl. c. 1490-1552), 'the soldier of Calais,' copyist, translator, and chronicler He was born some time between 1490 and 1500 in Gronnant Uchaf, Gwespyr, in the parish of Llanasa, Flintshire, where he inherited twenty-four acres of land from his uncle Siôn ap Dafydd. Nothing is known of his early life in Wales, but in his 'Chronicle' (v. infra) he has much to say about himself in the service of the Wingfield family, in London and France. HARRI, WILLIAM (Gwilym Garw-dyle; 1763 - 1844), poet Born 18 December 1763 at Garw-dyle in Penderyn, Brecknock, a grandson, it is said, of the poet Siôn Llewelyn of Vaynor. He was a weaver, as were his brothers Siôn Harri of Vaynor and Edward Harri of Cefn-Coed-y-Cymer. HOWEL, HARRI (fl. 1637-1671), bard son of Howel ap Siôn Ieuan of the parish of Dolgelley, also a bard. He was contemporary with Gruffydd Phylip and sang to many of the families to whom that bard sang. On the evidence of the eighteen (or so) cywyddau by him which survive, Harri Howel sang to members of houses ranging from Bodwrdda (west Caernarfonshire), Gwaenynog and Llwyn Ynn (in the vale of Clwyd), to Nannau and Hafod Dywyll
HOWELL, GWILYM (1705 - 1775), almanac-maker and poet edition, Eos Ceiriog, of Huw Morys's work, he made extensive use of this material. HUGHES, DEWI ARWEL (1947 - 2017), Christian leader and theologian in the Religious Studies Department at the Polytechnic of Wales.
