GRIFFITHS, IEUAN - see
WILLIAMS, DAVID MATTHEW
GRUFFUDD ap DAFYDD FYCHAN
(fl. 15th century), poet
Fychan after reading the elegy of Hywel ap Dafydd ap
Ieuan
ap Rhys on
Ieuan
ap Hywel Swrdwal. Two englynion, presumably composed by a son of his, Owain, are found in Peniarth MS 77 (319).
GRUFFUDD ap NICOLAS
(fl. 1415-1460), esquire and a leading figure in the local administration of the principality of South Wales in the middle of the 15th century
Owen Tudor. It is, therefore, impossible to accept the reports that he was mortally wounded either at the battle of Wakefield, 1460, or at Mortimer's Cross, 1461. His praises were sung by Dafydd ab Edmwnd, Hywel ap Dafydd ap
Ieuan
ap Rhys, Rhys Llwyd ap Rhys ap Rhicert, Gwilym ap
Ieuan
Hen, and Lewis Glyn Cothi. It is probable that the englynion attributed to him and Owen Dwnn and Griffith Benrhaw
GRUFFUDD HAFREN
(fl. c. 1600), poet
Davies of Mallwyd (NLW MS 5269B (393b, 405)), and elegies to the two poets, Siôn Phylip (NLW MS 799D (40)) and Thomas Penllyn (Cwrtmawr MS 11B (189)). A bardic controversy or ymryson, took place - Rhisiart Phylip and Gruffudd Hafren against Siôn Phylip and
Ieuan
Tew (Llanstephan MS 133 (497-500)); and a shorter one occurred between Roger Cyffin and Gruffudd (Cwrtmawr MS 206B (101)). No details have
GRUFFUDD LEIAF
(fl. 15th century), poet
those of Robert Leiaf and Syr Siôn Leiaf, two other members of Gruffudd's family, in various other manuscripts. (Jones and Lewis, Mynegai). His son,
Ieuan
ap Gruffudd Leiaf, is separately noticed.
GRUFFUDD LLWYD ab IFAN
(fl. 1564), poet
nothing is known about his life, but it appears from one of his poems that he lived in Anglesey. Some of his work remains in manuscripts, and this includes cywyddau to Elis Prys of Plas Iolyn (NLW MS 1247D (22)),
Ieuan
ap Siôn ap Maredudd of Bryncyr (NLW MS 5282B (49)), and Tudur ap Rhobert of Berain (NLW MS 6495D (118b, 120 - in the poet's hand apparently)). In addition to his poetry of praise
GRUFFUDD NANNAU
(fl. c. 1460), poet
A member apparently of the Nannau family. He was contemporary with Dafydd ap Maredudd ap Tudur, fl. 1460. Some examples of his work exist in manuscript, and these include an englyn written to the poet Gruffudd Phylip (NLW MS 643B (39b)), a cywydd to the sons of
Ieuan
Fychan of Pengwern (died c. 1458) (Cardiff MS. 83 (28b)); NLW MS 3049D (500)), and another to Dafydd Llwyd ap Gruffudd Deuddwr

GRUFFUDD, IFAN
(c. 1655 - c. 1734), poet
GRUFFYDD ap IEUAN ap LLYWELYN FYCHAN
(c. 1485 - 1553), bard and member of a Welsh landed family
Son of
Ieuan
ap Llywelyn Fychan. He lived in Llewenni Fechan (later Llannerch), near S. Asaph. Some poems by him in British Museum manuscripts (Detholiad o waith Gruffydd ab
Ieuan
ab Llewelyn Vychan) were published in 1910, edited by J. C. Morrice, who gave some biographical details. Subsequently, i.e. in 1934, T. Allen Glenn gave, in The Family of Griffith of Garn and Plasnewydd in the County of
GRUFFYDD LLWYD Sir
(d. 1335), traditional hero of a supposed Welsh revolt in 1322
Mortimer in the previous year. Sir Gruffydd Llwyd died shortly before 12 July 1335. His heir was his son
Ieuan
, and he also had (according to Welsh pedigrees) seven daughters of his marriage with Gwenllian, daughter of Cynan ap Maredudd.
