held since 1577. He followed his father to Oxford (entering Oriel College 22 May 1601), and to the Inner Temple, which he entered from Clifford's Inn on

He appears first as one of the itinerant preachers who followed Vavasor Powell in the days of the Propagation Act (1650-

), as one of Powell's chief apologists in the Examen et Purgamen Vavasoris, and supporting Powell in his opposition to Cromwell's Protectorate by signing the Word for God. Under the ' Triers ' he was a settled minister at Forden, Montgomeryshire. With the Restoration he was

(Jes. Coll. MS. 18) (R.W.M. II, 88). His pedigree is given in Peniarth MS 134 (142-

As he composed an elegy on the death of Tudur Aled (c. 1526), and as another of his cywyddau is dated 1582 in one manuscript, it would appear that he lived to an advanced age; this is borne out in the elegy upon him by Siôn Tudur (Llanstephan MS 166 (89)). His work includes satirical englynion to Gruffudd
RANDLES, ELIZABETH
(1801? - 1829), harpist and pianist

May 1801, the daughter of Edward Randles, Wrexham. While very young she became prominent by reason of her ability to play the harp and the piano. She went on a concert tour through parts of England; she also played, with her father, before George III and queen Charlotte. She and two sisters moved to Liverpool, and it was there that she died in June 1829.
RANKIN, SUSANNAH JANE

July 1989. A service of thanksgiving for her life was held at Pendref Chapel, Llanfyllin, on November 25, 1989.

opened a printing works in Ystalyfera. He established a new weekly newspaper, Y Gwladwr Cymreig in 1885. The first edition appeared on 22 January but it terminated on

September of the same year. D. Onllwyn Brace, Ystalyfera, J. Dyfrig Owen, Glantwrch and J.T. Morgan (Thalamus) were each, in turn, his editors. Ebenezer Rees had a great interest in social issues and he was prominent in the labour
REES, EDWARD WALTER
(Gwallter Dyfi; 1881 - 1940), bank manager and bearer of the Gorsedd sword

April 1940, leaving two sons and a daughter. He was secretary of the Cardigan Cymrodorion Society which he founded and was a member of several other cultural societies. He was also secretary of Carmarthen national eisteddfod, 1911, and bearer of the sword of the Gorsedd of Bards from 1913 until 1940. Gwendolen (Gwen) Rees was born

July 1906, in Abercynon, Glamorganshire, the younger daughter of Ebenezer Rees (1865-1948) and Elizabeth Agnes (née Jones), of Cilybebyll (1877-1921). The family soon moved to 4 Elm Grove, Aberdare when her father was appointed Superintendent of Police. She was educated at the Girls' Grammar School, Aberdare, and University of Wales, Cardiff, where she graduated
REES, GEORGE

lived as far away as Cilgwyn in the parish of Manordivy. He died 17 June 1795, aged 75; his wife Elizabeth died

June 1798, aged 77; both were buried at Cilfowyr. His will refers to two of his children, James Rees and Margaret Davies.
