Born in London 26 May 1809, he was the son of

Clark (1777 - 1848), a chaplain of Chelsea Hospital, and Clara Dicey; Samuel Clarke, the theologian, was his great-grandfather. He was educated at Charterhouse and after engaging for some time in medical studies qualified as an engineer. Lady Henrietta Clive (née Herbert) was the daughter of Henry Arthur Herbert (Herbert), first earl of Powis (second creation) and his wife Barbara Herbert (née Herbert, 1735-1786). Henrietta was born on 3 September 1758 at her father's principal residence Oakley Park, at Bromfield, near Ludlow in Shropshire. The only sibling who reached maturity was her elder brother
