HUW ARWYSTLI (fl. 1550), poet Little is known of his career. He is believed to have been a native of the parish of Trefeglwys in the cantref of Arwystli, Montgomeryshire, and to have spent most of his life in that area. He composed a considerable 'amount of verse to the landed families of that neighbourhood. For his works, see J. HUW CAE LLWYD (fl. 1431-1504), poet nine awdlau and thirty-five cywyddau, some being elegies, some panegyrics, and some petitions, after the manner of poets in those days. Huw Cae Llwyd was essentially a courtly poet, one whose poetry was at its best when he was returning thanks for benefits received. The date of his birth is not known, but the dates between which he flourished can be established from internal evidence provided by his
HUW CEIRIOG (fl. c. 1560-1600), poet eisteddfod. The following manuscripts contain examples of his work: B.M. Add. MS. 14894; Cardiff MS. 63; Llanstephan MS 118; NLW MS 3048D; NLW MS 6496C, NLW MS 8330B; Peniarth MS 84 (Llyfr Dafydd Cayo), Peniarth MS 104. The name Hywel Ceiriog appears instead of Huw in some manuscript lists of the 1568 Caerwys graduate poets (e.g. Peniarth MS 121 (215), Peniarth MS 144 (268)); and a bardic controversy
HUW CORNWY (fl. 1580-1596), bard
HUW DAFI (fl. 15th-16th century), bard Various poems attributed to 'Huw Dafi,' 'Huw Dafi of Llŷn,' and 'Huw Dafi of Gwynedd,' are found in manuscripts. Nothing is known about the poet - or poets, and it is not clear whether any of these names refer to Huw ap Dafydd of whose poetry many examples are found.
