MATHIAS, WILLIAM JAMES
(1934 - 1992), composer and teacher
William Mathias was born on 1 November 1934 in Whitland. His father, James Hughes Mathias (1893-1969), was a history teacher at Whitland Grammar School and his mother Marian (née Evans, 1896-1980) was an organist and pianist. At the age of six he began to take piano lessons with David
Lloyd
Phillips of Llanfyrnach, and it was to him that Mathias dedicated his sonata for piano, op.23. In 1952 he
MATTHEWS, EDWARD
(1813 - 1892), Calvinistic Methodist minister and author
sermons was published under the editorship of D. M. Phillips in 1927. He was also a distinguished author. His most popular work was his Hanes Bywyd Siencyn Penhydd (Jenkin Thomas), published in book form in 1850. Another similar work is

He transcribed a considerable body of Welsh poetry, and made a pioneer study of the texts of the Welsh laws in his ' Deddfgrawn ' or ' Corpus Hoelianum ' (Wynnstay MSS. 37-8) in 1660-3. Jones at Aberbanc, putting on plays such as Liz Whittaker's The White Tower. He also began to investigate the performative aspects of the structures he was making at places like Pigeonsford in Llangrannog. This interest led him to seek collaborations with
MEILYR BRYDYDD
(fl. c . 1100-1137), chief court-poet
-Jones noted a chronological difficulty in accepting as the work of Meilyr Brydydd the elegy to Trahaearn ap Caradog and Meilyr ap Rhiwallon who were slain at Mynydd Cam (1081). The only other remaining poems by him are the elegy to Gruffudd ap Cynan (1137) and the poet's own death-bed lament. In the former, as Sir J. E.

observed, we have the earliest extant expression in Welsh poetry of the

MILES, WILLIAM JAMES DILLWYN
(1916 - 2007), local government officer and author

Owen's The Description of Pembrokeshire (1994). He published his autobiography in Welsh, Atgofion Hen Arwyddfardd in 1997, and in English, A Mingled Yarn in 2000. His wife Joyce died in 1976, and for the last 23 years of his life his companion was Judith Graham Jones. Dillwyn Miles died at the age of 91 on 1 August 2007.
