HYWEL SWRDWAL (fl. 1430-1460), poet His French surname suggests that there was foreign blood in his family and perhaps it is right to connect the name Swrdwal with the ' de Surda Valle ' which is found in the name of the Norman ' Robertus de Surda Valle ' who enlisted under the banner of lord Bohemund (1096) for one of the crusades, according to Matthew Paris. It may be, too, that Hywel Swrdwal was one of the descendants of the Sir
IAGO ab IDWAL FOEL (fl. 942-979), king of Gwynedd kings, submitted to Edgar, at Chester, in 973, an event which inspired the legend of Edgar's triumphal passage along the Dee. The date of his death is unknown. Pedigrees ascribe to him another son, Cystennin, who founded no family.
IEUAN ap BEDO GWYN (fl. c. 1530-1590?), poet and owner of the Llysyn estate, Llanerfyl, Montgomeryshire, before its purchase by the Herbert family; descendant of one of the younger branches of the family of Neuadd Wen (a neighbouring estate), and therefore of Maredudd, brother of Gruffudd ap Cynan. A little only of his work remains, and this includes a cywydd written to Dafydd ap Ieuan Llwyd of Nantmynach, in 1538.
IEUAN ap GRUFFUDD LEIAF (fl. latter half of 15th century), poet A member of a Denbighshire family, son of Gruffudd Leiaf ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd Goch, and a descendant of Owain Gwynedd (Peniarth MS 127 (19)). Some examples of his work remain in manuscript, including cywyddau and awdlau to members of the Penrhyn and Nanconwy families, vaticinatory and religious poems, a poem on Aberconwy, a satire on the Llugwy river for hindering the poet
IEUAN ap LLYWELYN FYCHAN (d. 1532), poet A member of the family of Llannerch, Vale of Clwyd, and father of Gruffydd ap Ieuan ap Llywelyn Fychan. Some of his work remains, and this includes vaticinatory and love poems.
IEUAN DDU ap DAFYDD ab OWAIN (fl. c. 1440-1480), poet Nothing is known about him, and no proof exists for connecting him, as Iolo Morganwg does, with Ieuan Ddu, ancestor of the family of Dyffryn, Aberdare. A number of cywyddau are attributed to him in manuscript, but the only certain example of his work appears to be the cywydd to Ieuan Gethin ap Ieuan ap Lleision.
IEUAN DEULWYN (fl. c. 1460), poet Llwyd ap Gwilym of Castell Hywel, Llywelyn ap Dafydd ab Einion of Llanllawddog, and his family, Siôn ap Dafydd of Llys Newydd, and John Lewys and his father of Prysaddfed in Anglesey. He composed religious and love poetry, and also one poem of controversy, or ymryson, addressed to Bedo Brwynllys; Ieuan was himself a keen Yorkist, and he accused Bedo of being hypocritical in this matter. IEUAN FYCHAN ap IEUAN ab ADDA (d. c. 1458), poet An ancestor of the family associated with Mostyn Hall, Flintshire. Ieuan Fychan lived at Pengwern, Denbighshire, before he married Angharad, heiress of Mostyn. Lord Mostyn and T. A. IEUAN GETHIN ap IEUAN ap LLEISION (fl. c. 1450) Baglan, poet and gentleman A descendant of the family of Caradog ap Iestyn ap Gwrgant. According to some genealogists (e.g. Gruffudd Hiraethog in Peniarth MS 178, i (43)) he married the daughter of Tomas ab Ifor Hael. Bards from North and South Wales were entertained at his court at Baglan, and two cywyddau addressed to him remain in manuscript, one by Ieuan Ddu ap Dafydd ab Owain, and the other by Iorwerth Fynglwyd. IEUAN LLWYD SIEFFRAI (fl. c. 1599-1619), poet Born in 1575, son and heir of Sieffrai ab Ieuan Llwyd, Dyffryn Ereithlyn, Eglwys-bach, Denbighshire, of the Lloyd family of Hafod Unnos. On 12 July 1591, at Llandrillo church, Meironnydd, when he was 16 years old and she only 11, he married Margred, daughter and sole heiress of Morus ap Siôn ab Elis of Palau. ILLINGWORTH, LESLIE GILBERT (1902 - 1979), political cartoonist Leslie Illingworth was born on 2 September 1902 in Harbour Road, Barry, the youngest son of Richard Illingworth, a quantity surveyor from Cheshire, and his wife Helen (née MacGregor), a teacher from Yorkshire.
