PERYF ap CEDIFOR WYDDEL (fl. 1170), poet He was one of eight brothers at least, seven of whom were foster-brothers of Hywel ab Owain Gwynedd. When Hywel was slain at Pentraeth, Anglesey (1170), in battle against his half-brothers, Dafydd and Rhodri, the sons of Christina, the seven stood by him. PHILLIPS, EDGAR (Trefîn; 1889 - 1962), tailor, school-teacher, poet, and Archdruid of Wales, 1960-62 the workshop was a nursery for poets and a school in the cynganeddion, Trefin mastered Yr Ysgol Farddol (Dafydd Morganwg), the poets' primer. For a year after completing his apprenticeship he worked as a tailor in Letterston and Whitland. He returned to Cardiff to specialize in cutting and he became a tailor of ladies' wear. Perhaps the most interesting of the miscellaneous poems are the cywyddau ymryson - poems written in bardic controversies, with his own brother, Rhisiart Phylip, for precedence at Nannau - with his uncle, Siôn Dafydd Siencyn, with Edmund Prys, with Thomas Prys of Plas Iolyn, and, most interesting of all, with Siôn Tudur of S. POWEL, DAVID (c.1540 - 1598), cleric and historian Prof. Melville Richards, on the basis of a deed of transfer of land dated 26 October 1558 at N.L.W., (Eriviat Estate Records, File 35), concludes that the year of birth of Dr. Powel should be at least as early as 1540. They include a poem on Christ's passion, one complaining of the contemporary neglect of old poetry, an elegy to a greyhound, poems addressed to Siôn ap Rhisiart of Bryniog, Ieuan Owain of Dyffryn Aur, Rhobert Burchinshaw, two to Ieuan Brydydd Hir, and one to Dafydd Jones, Trefriw, requesting a copy of Y Cydymaith Diddan. POWEL, MORGAN (fl. c. 1563), poet, one of the Glamorgan writers of cwndidau, a cleric of Llanhari probably one of the Powel family of Tir Iarll (see under Anthony Powel). Apparently he was cleric at Laleston, near Bridgend, c. 1563. Some of his work still exists, including a poem addressed to Wiliam Prys of Briton Ferry, another to reconcile Siôn Mawddwy with Tomas ap Wiliam ap Hywel. He also participated in two bardic controversies or ymrysonau with Llywelyn Siôn and Tomas Llywelyn.

POWEL, THOMAS (1845 - 1922), Celtic scholar mediaeval Welsh texts - in particular, Ystorya de Carolo Magno (1883). In 1888 he edited, on behalf of the Society of Cymmrodorion, Thomas Stephens's version of The Gododin of Aneurin Gwawdrydd, In 1896 he published a facsimile reproduction of bishop Morgan's Psalmau Dafydd, 1588, with copious notes. POWEL, WATCYN (c. 1600 - 1655) Pen-y-fai, Tir Iarll, gentleman, bard, and genealogist son of Hopcyn Powel and nephew of Anthony Powel, Llwydarth. He was instructed in the bardic art; six cywyddau by him, in the hand of Tomas ab Ieuan, Tre'r-bryn, survive in N.L.W. Llanover MS. B 1. Very little is known of him but the elegies written in his memory by Edward Dafydd and David Williams (Dafydd o'r Nant) show that he, like his uncle, was a genealogist and skilled in the art of heraldry
