also. He sang much to gentlemen in his own province - members of the families of Games, Stradling, Bawdrip, and Mansel, and to David, abbot of Margam, between 1500 and 1517. But his chief patron was Rhys ap Siôn, Aberpergwm, the most distinguished member of that notable family. He visited Kidwelly and Ystrad Tywi also; it may be surmised that one of his favourite haunts was the court of

students. In 1838 he became pastor at Neath, and founded new churches at Aberdylais, Glyn Neath, and Pontardawe; he also initiated a Cymreigyddion Society at Neath. But internal disputes arose, and Isaac was also suspected of unorthodoxy (D. R. Phillips, Hist. of the Vale of Neath, 155), so in 1841 he moved to Trosnant church in Pontypool. William Milbourne). He was educated at Taliesin Williams's school at Merthyr and at Goulstone's boarding school, Bristol (1830-2). On leaving school he was articled to William Perkins (afterwards his partner) and admitted solicitor in 1838. He married Sarah

JAMES, DAVID EMRYS
(Dewi Emrys; 1881 - 1952), minister (Congl.), writer and poet
on The Carmarthen Journal. The editor, Henry Tobit Evans gave him every encouragement to continue to write and to recite on stage as he had done since he was young. He was made sub-editor and editor of the Welsh column of the Journal before he was 20 years old, and was released to attend the Old College School as a part-time student under
Joseph

Pantyfedwen Eisteddfodau were established in Pontrhydfendigaid (The James Family Eisteddfod), Cardigan (John James Memorial Eisteddfod) and Lampeter (Rhys Thomas James Eisteddfod).

D.J. James's main aim was to give individuals an opportunity to compete in eisteddfodau intermediate in standard between those of local eisteddfodau and the national eisteddfod. He participated in transferring the
JAMES, EVAN

Pontypridd) and Mountain Ash; he also lived for a time with his son at the Swan Hotel, Aberaman. He died 11 January 1902 at 6 Hawthorne Terrace, Aberdare, and was buried in the Aberdare cemetery. A memorial to father and son, the work of

William Goscombe John, R.A., was unveiled in Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd, 23 July 1930.

Merthyr Museum Committee. He became a M.B.E. in 1919. He died on 15 February 1942. A bronze bust of him, by

William Goscombe John, is in the National Museum of Wales.
JAMES, ROBERT
(Jeduthyn; 1825 - 1879), musician
anthems were popular in the Merthyr area. One of his tunes, ' Aberafan,' is to be found in Rosser Beynon's Telyn Seion. In 1853 he married Ann Parry, sister of
Joseph
Parry (1841 - 1903), but she died in 1855. In 1857 he went to Australia where he lived for five years. Returning to Wales, he spent six months organizing a series of concerts. He then emigrated for the second time, this time to the U.S.A
JAMES, THOMAS
(Llallawg; 1817 - 1879), clergyman, antiquary, and eisteddfodwr
; she died two years later. An antiquary by inclination, he was F.S.A., and one of the founders of the Cambrian Archaeological Association (Archæologia Cambrensis, 1846, 463-5). He was also one of the pillars of the ' Association of Welsh Clergy in the West Riding of the County of York.' He wrote biographies of
