LLOYD, JOHN
(Einion Môn; 1792 - 1834), schoolmaster and poet
that Society; and when clerics in Wales attacked the society, Lloyd, in 1829, composed a reply to these ' brainless chatterers ' as he called them. The reports of Cymreigyddion meetings, in Seren Gomer, show that he also lectured to the society. But in 1832 we find him, in company with
Griffith
Davies, F.R.S., protesting vigorously against the increasingly Radical tone of the society - see the debate
LLOYD, JOHN AMBROSE
(1815 - 1874), musician
published in the second supplement to John
Roberts
(Ieuan Gwyllt), Llyfr Tonau Cynulleidfaol. He died 6 September 1914 at Liverpool; he was buried in the Chester cemetery. C. F. Lloyd was another son.
LLOYD, JOHN MEIRION
(1913 - 1998), missionary and author
who became his life partner, Joan Maclese (1923-2017), and they married on 28 October 1944. A few days after the wedding he sailed to India on the Stirling Castle, in the company of other missionaries from Wales including Gwen Rees
Roberts
. He arrived in the town of Aizawl in Mizoram in December 1944. His wife was not able to get a ship until November 1945. Three children were born to them in India
LLOYD, LUDOVIC
(fl. 1573-1610), courtier, versifier, and compiler
Fifth son of Oliver Lloyd, lord of the manor of Marrington, Salop, by Gwenllian, daughter of
Griffith
ap Howel ap Ieuan Blayney (see Blayney family), Gregynog, and grandson of David Lloyd Vychan, an hereditary burgess of Welshpool, and owner of Nantcribba in the parish of Forden, Montgomeryshire. The date of his birth is unknown, but he was old enough in 1587 to have been successful in gaining
LLOYD, RICHARD
(1771 - 1834), Calvinistic Methodist minister
Born at Nantdaenog, Llantrisant, Anglesey, sixth child of William Lloyd and his wife Jane - she was a daughter of the famous old dissenter William Prichard (1702 - 1773) of Clwchdernog. His paternal grandfather was David Lloyd ap Rhys (J. E.
Griffith
, Pedigrees, 100), and in his articles in Goleuad Cymru, Richard Lloyd used to sign himself ' Rhisiart William Dafydd.' He joined the Methodist
LLOYD, Sir RICHARD
(1606 - 1676) Esclus, royalist and judge
both Cardiff and Radnorshire, sitting for the latter till his death on 5 May 1676, when he was buried at Wrexham. Another member of the family (not to mention, for the time being, David Owen, 'Dafydd y Garreg Wen') deserves some attention. A comparison of the charts in J. E.
Griffith
(Pedigrees, 330, 353, 269) shows that Sir Richard Lloyd had a sister Margaret who married Richard Anwyl of Parc. Their
LLOYD, ROBERT
(Llwyd o'r Bryn; 1888 - 1961), eisteddfodwr, entertainer and farmer
he was the witty compère of Parti Tai'rfelin (see Robert
Roberts
below), a group which held concerts in all parts of Wales and for Welsh societies in England. He also frequently took part in radio and television programmes. He had the true story-teller's gift of narrating or writing a tale. This is evident in his autobiography Y Pethe (1955), the title of which later came to stand for the values
LLOYD, SIMON
(1756 - 1836), Methodist cleric
Methodist cleric of Plas-yn-dre, Bala (which, says Edward Lhuyd, was the largest house in the town - it was in a storehouse attached to it that the Independents of Bala assembled before the building of their chapel); the Lloyd family of Plas-yn-dre were a branch of the Lloyd family of Rhiwaedog - and see J. E.
Griffith
, Pedigrees, 234, 383), and the name 'Simon' was hereditary. A SIMON LLOYD of
LLOYD, THOMAS
(Crych Elen; 1841 - 1909), musician
Born at Liverpool, of an English father and a Welsh mother. He was brought up at Dolwyddelan, of which his mother was a native, went to work in a slate quarry, but his whole thought was given to music. He was admitted as 'bard' and 'musician' at the pseudo-gorsedd, known as 'Arwest Llyn Geirionydd' (see
Roberts
, William John), held near Trefriw, and won some prizes at eisteddfodau. He emigrated

Commission and Coal Board. He was one of the founders of the Town Planning Institute in 1914. He entered into partnership with Alex J. Gordon in 1948. He became a member of the Cambrian Archaeological Association in 1919 and he was chairman of its general committee 1951-54 and President in 1958-59. With his wife, Ethel
Roberts
, M.A. (they married in 1914), he attended the Association's annual meetings
LLOYD, WILLIAM
(1717 - 1777), cleric and translator
His antecedents can be established by collating Morris Letters, ii, 158; J. E.
Griffith
, Pedigrees, 93, and church records at N.L.W. He was of the family of Merddyn Gwyn, Pentraeth, Anglesey, though Lewis Morris confused him with William Lloyd of Trallwyn in Eifionydd (see
Griffith
, op. cit., 212). His father was also a William Lloyd, an exciseman, who was chorister in Bangor cathedral; his
LLWYD, HARRI
(d. 1799), Wesleyan lay preacher
His early history is still obscure. He is said to have been convinced of his sin under the ministry of David Jones (nephew of
Griffith
Jones, Llanddowror?) at the Llanlluan chapel-of-ease; this conviction was deepened by the preaching of Howel Harris and the full light burst upon him about August 1743 - one of the few relatively certain dates in his early history. He was a Wesleyan lay preacher
