Born at Quakers' Yard, Glamorganshire, the son of Daniel Hughes, a cobbler. At the age of nine he worked at the Llancaiach Colliery, Gelligaer, but later left the colliery for six months schooling at the school held by Thomas

Teifigar Davies collection of MSS in N.L.W.) it appears that Jane Hughes was the third child (and third daughter) of John Hughes (1775 - 1854), Calvinistic Methodist minister, of Pontrobert, Montgomeryshire, and Ruth (
