REES, Sir JAMES FREDERICK (1883 - 1967), Principal of the University College at Cardiff , among them The dominion of Ceylon (1949) and the B.B.C. Welsh regional annual lecture entitled Of Welsh nationality and historians (1951). He married in 1913 Dora Rose Lucile, daughter of Gethin Davies, Principal of the Baptist College, Cardiff and they had one son. He died 7 January 1967 at his home, 11 Celyn Grove, Cyncoed, Cardiff.
RHYS DEGANWY (fl. c. 1480), a poet who took his name, obviously, from the Creuddyn district of Caernarvonshire. No details are known concerning his life, but a number of his poems remain in manuscript; they include poems to Dafydd Gethin ap Gruffudd Goch of Llanwnnog and William Herbert of Raglan.
RHYS WYN ap CADWALADR (fl. c. 1600) Giler,, poet second son of Cadwaladr ap Morris Gethin of Foelas. Some of his englynion and cywyddau are preserved in manuscript, among them an elegy to his son (Llanstephan MS 54 (259)), and a cywydd ymryson with Thomas Prys in Jes. Coll. ROBERTS, DAVID OWEN (1888 - 1958), educationalist Born 6 October 1888 at 28 Church Row, Trecynon, Aberdare, son of Hannah (née Jones) and Gethin Roberts. He was educated at Llwydcoed Elementary School, Aberdare County School and Bangor Normal College, 1907-09, where he gained his Teacher's Certificate. ROBERTS, WILLIAM JOHN (Gwilym Cowlyd; 1828 - 1904), poet, printer, bookseller, bibliophile, and eccentric Geirionydd, near the reputed birthplace of Taliesin. Among his productions are 'Mynyddoedd Eryri' and 'Murmuron.' He published the life and works of Ieuan Glan Geirionydd, the works of Owen Gethin Jones (Gweithiau Gethin), and Diliau'r Delyn (old penillion). He died early in December 1904 at Llanrwst, and was buried on 8 December in St. Mary's churchyard there.
STEPHENS, THOMAS (Casnodyn, Gwrnerth, Caradawg; 1821 - 1875), historian and social reformer at an explosion at the Crawshay Gethin Pit No. 2 in 1862, he instigated a relief fund, and collected and distributed money until the day before he died. He was a close friend of and political campaigner for H. A. Bruce, Lord Aberdare, Liberal MP for Merthyr Tydfil between 1852 and 1868, and served as High Constable of Merthyr in 1858. THOMAS, Sir DANIEL (LLEUFER) (1863 - 1940), stipendiary magistrate to read for the Bar. He was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn on 15 May 1889. He joined the South Wales circuit, holding his first brief at the Carmarthen assizes on 10 December 1889. He married, 18 June 1892, at S. VAUGHAN family Hergest, Kington Gethin, daughter of Dafydd ap Cadwgan ap Phylip Dorddu, one of the Vaughans of Tyle Glas. The earliest record of him is that he was constable of the castle of Huntingdon (some two miles from Hergest) in 1422. WYNNE family Voelas, chaplain to cardinal Wolsey, he was the father of Elis ap Rhys, i.e. Dr. Elis Prys (see also Vaughan family, Pant Glas).
