Born at Campbelltown, Argyleshire. His father,

Vertue Innes, was appointed collector of the South Wales District of Customs at Llanelly, Carmarthenshire, and played a prominent part in the foundation of a higher grade school in the town c. 1863. Innes was an accountant in the service of Messrs. Nevill Druce at Llanelly. On 9 August 1883, at All Saints church, Llanelly, he married Alice Ann

illegitimate sons). Iolo Goch's earliest poems date from the 1340s, and he is thought to have been born about 1325. Nothing is known about his bardic training, but the title 'Herod' describing one of his ancestors is interesting in light of the prominence of heraldry in some of his poems.
