Few facts are known of his early life, but it is believed that he was born at Brynllwynog, Bryneglwys, in 1794 or 1795. There is evidence, however, that he lived at Cynwyd, near Corwen, from 1824 to 1831. He was twice married (his first wife, who was buried at Llangar, may have been a native of Cynwyd), and had eight children.
