ROBERTS, ROBERT (SILYN)
(Rhosyr; 1871 - 1930), Calvinistic Methodist minister, poet, social reformer, tutor
published, with W. J.
Gruffydd
, in 1900, Telynegion, which marks the beginning of a new lyrical period in Welsh poetry. He published Trystan ac Esyllt a Chaniadau Eraill in 1904. Other poems were published later, some under the pseudonym 'Rhosyr,' but they have not been collected with the exception of a short memorial selection, Cofarwydd, 1930. He published a pamphlet on the I.L.P. : Y Blaid Lafur
ROBERTS, SAMUEL
(S.R.; 1800 - 1885), Independent minister, editor, Radical reformer
the latter moved to Ruthin in 1848. His youngest brother, '
Gruffydd
Rhisiart', looked after the small-holding, Diosg Farm, where the family had been tenants since 1806. 'S.R's interest in agriculture was, therefore, personal and practical. His father's bitter experience of spending £700 on improvements to Diosg Farm in seven years, and having the rent doubled, accounts for his strictures against

teacher at Newborough school in 1931 where he spent the rest of his life, as teacher and then headmaster of the school. Broadcasting in Welsh began from Bryn Meirion Bangor in 1935 and W. H. Roberts took part in very many feature programmes produced by Sam Jones, Ifan O. Williams, Dafydd

ROWLANDS, Sir HUGH

Born on 6 May 1928 at Plastirion, Llanrug, Caernarfonshire, the second son of John and Elizabeth Rowlands. His father was the heir to the Plastirion estate which amounted to approx. 1,200 acres. The family claimed descent from Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, prince of Powys and were also descended from Dafydd, brother of Llywelyn ap

SALESBURY, WILLIAM
(1520? - 1584?), scholar and chief translator of the first Welsh New Testament
He was a gentleman by birth, the second son of Ffwg ap Robert ap Thomas Salbri Hen, and Annes, daughter of Wiliam ap
Gruffydd
ap Robin of Cochwillan. He was born at Llansannan but spent the greater part of his life at Plas Isa, Llanrwst. He was educated at Oxford and, in all probability, it was while he was there that he left the Roman Catholic Church and became a Protestant. He married Catrin
SION CENT
(1367? - 1430?), poet
Practically nothing is known about his life. It may be confidently asserted that his name was Siôn Cent although he has been called Siôn Gwent (e.g. by
Gruffydd
Robert), Siôn y Cent, and Siôn Kemp(t). He is also called Doctor in many of the manuscripts, but not in the earlier ones. The reason for these variants is that in the folk memory of Herefordshire and the marches he got mixed up with Dr
SMYTH, ROGER

students, against the English (see under Clynnog, Morys). The English won, and Smyth was dismissed from the college because he refused to express his readiness to be ordained priest, and to return to England as a missionary. After this, his history becomes obscure; perhaps he was assisted by his friends

and William Mostyn (NLW MS 1553A (761)). He married (1) Alis, daughter of Robert Salusbury of Rug, (2) Jane, daughter of John Massey of Broxon in Cheshire, and (3) Margaret, daughter of Sir William Griffith of Penrhyn. He died 15 April 1586, aged 60, and was buried at
