THOMAS, DAVID (Dafydd Ddu Eryri; 1759 - 1822), man of letters and poet known as 'Belle Isle March') at the end of the winter of 1783-4, inviting the poets to meet at Betws Bach on Lady-day; Hywel Eryri, William Bifan, Siôn Caeronwy, Sian Parry, and others accepted the invitation, and that was the first of a series of meetings of bards in Caernarvonshire which gave Dafydd an opportunity of teaching the rules of Welsh poetry to his 'chicks,' as he called them. After the battle of Tewkesbury, 1471, it is said that Edward IV ordered him to pursue and capture Jasper Tudor, earl of Pembroke, but it was Vaughan himself who fell into the earl's hands, to be summarily beheaded at Chepstow.
