LEWIS, LEWIS WILLIAM
(Llew Llwyfo; 1831 - 1901), poet, novelist, and journalist
Gwladgarwr and the Glorian, later to Denbigh where he was on the staff of Y Faner and, later still, to the Herald office at Caernarvon. He was also connected with the Gwron, the
Gwalia
, and the Genedl. In 1870 he went to the U.S.A. where he remained for some four years as joint editor of the Welsh newspaper, Y Wasg. Subsequently, he paid a second visit to the U.S.A. He organized many concerts both in Wales
MORRIS, ROBERT DAVID
(1871 - 1948), itinerant bookseller and author
preface to his second novel he drew attention to the reaction of young readers to the lack of Welsh novels which led them to prefer popular English novels. He saw the novel as the most effective means of winning them back to read Welsh. His first novel Derwyn, 1924, attracted many readers. It was followed by Serch

OWEN, JOHN
(Owain Alaw; 1821 - 1883), musician
Morgannwg,' anthem 'Och, Annuwiol'; Llanrwst 1859 anthem 'Arnat Ti y llefais.' In 1860 John Owen published Gems of Welsh Melody, a collection which proved very useful, and was widely used. He won the prize at a Caernarfon eisteddfod for his cantata, 'Tywysog Cymru,' whilst for the Chester national eisteddfod of 1866 he composed 'Gŵyl

THOMAS, IVOR OWEN
(1898 - 1982), Labour politician
He was born on 5 December 1898, the son of Benjamin L. and Margaret Thomas of Briton Ferry. He was educated at Vernon Place School, Briton Ferry, and later at the Central Labour College, London, 1923-25, where he held a NUR scholarship. He began work at the age of ten as a barber's lather boy. Later, he earned his living at the

the Royal Academy of Music, where he was taught by J. B. Chatterton and Cipriani Potter. He stayed at the academy for six years, being made a Fellow when he left; later he was made an honorary member. WYNNE, SARAH EDITH
(Eos Cymru; 1842 - 1897), vocalist
to the concerts being the singing of Welsh airs. She went to Liverpool at 14 to receive lessons in music from a Mr. Scarisbrook, staying there five years. Her first appearance in London as a soprano was in June 1862, in one of the annual concerts organised by Ellis Roberts (Eos Meirion).
