(fl. 1430-1470), gentleman and poet
Vychan ap Ieuan ap Rhys ap Llawdden,' and (2) ' Mawd, daughter of Sir William Clement, lord of Tregaron.' It is difficult to decide whether there were two men called Rhydderch ap Ieuan Llwyd, or whether the poet's father married a third time. Ieuan is usually connected with two districts in Cardiganshire, but the earliest extant manuscripts link him with Genau'r Glyn rather than with the vale of

. She died in 1895. Gwyrosydd left two sons and two daughters. Much of his verse, unassuming and very popular, appeared first in periodicals and newspapers, but collections of it were also published: Caneuon Gwyrosydd (Plas-marl, 1885), Caniadau Gwyrosydd (Cwmafan, 1892) (this includes the extremely popular hymn 'Calon Lân'), and

. In 1898 he was elected to the Cardiganshire county council and became first secretary of the Vale of

Bull Club in the same year. He was chairman of the Cardiganshire Beekeepers Association, and a member of the Welsh Cob Society from 1903, the Welsh Folk Song Society, the Gorsedd of Bards, etc. He was a prominent figure on the national eisteddfod field and was universally known as the

One of the three children of Major Price Lewes, adjutant of the Pembroke militia, and his wife Florence (née Kinnear, of Halifax, Nova Scotia); born c. 1873 in Canada, but brought up at Poyston, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, and educated privately. About 1902 the family moved to Tyglyn

LLYWELYN BRYDYDD HODDNANT

Iolo Morganwg connected him with Glamorgan, but the fact is that there are rivers in Radnorshire and Pembrokeshire called Hoddnant, in addition to that near Llantwit Major in Glamorgan. Two examples of his work are preserved in the Hendregadredd MS. and some other MSS., these being two awdlau addressed to Ieuan ap Gruffudd Foel of the
Aeron
valley in Cardiganshire.
MAELGWN ap RHYS
(c. 1170 - 1230), lord of Ceredigion
Llywelyn in 1211 which no doubt induced him to pass over to Llywelyn's side. The latter's continued distrust, nevertheless, is seen in the partition of the 'lord' Rhys's dominions made under Llywelyn's supervision in 1216, when Maelgwn was excluded from all territory lying north of the
Aeron
. He died at Llannerch-

late in the year 1230, and was buried at Strata Florida, being succeeded by his son
OWAIN ap GRUFFYDD
(d. 1236), prince of Deheubarth
' Rhys's dominions in 1216 gave him lands north of the
Aeron
, which were extended to cover the greater part of northern Ceredigion when Rhys Ieuanc died in 1222. He died at Strata Florida on 18 January 1236 and was buried there alongside his parents and brother. He was succeeded by one son - Maredudd.

Trefnant has a cywydd (Cwrtmawr MS 12B) which was written when David Lloyd went on a pilgrimage to Rome, whilst in the same manuscript is a poem written by Gutyn Coch Brydydd to Rhys and to his father, David Lloyd. Ieuan ap Rhydderch ap Ieuan Lloyd, gentleman and bard, of Glyn
Aeron
, was probably a great-uncle of David Lloyd; Ieuan ap Rhydderch, who is separately noticed, was the son of a one-time owner
