HUGHES, JOHN (1827 - 1893), Calvinistic Methodist minister , and he was accepted at the monthly meeting held at Garreg-lefn, 17 January 1848. In August 1848 he went to Bala C.M. College, where he was an industrious student and a good preacher who quickly made his mark. After leaving Bala he opened a school at Llannerch-y-medd, and, 5 November 1852, married Ellen Dew. HUGHES, RICHARD SAMUEL (1855 - 1893), musician Born 14 July 1855 at Aberystwyth, son of Benjamin and Ann Samuel Hughes, who kept an ironmonger's shop near the town clock. He showed musical talent and could play the piano when he was only 5 years of age. HUGHES, ROYSTON JOHN (BARON ISLWYN), (1925 - 2003), politician , Abergavenny, on 19 December 2003; his parish church, St Teilo, was small and the funeral was held at St Mary's Priory Church, Abergavenny on 5 January 2004, followed by cremation at Croesyceiliog. Many in the congregation wore Newport Rugby Football Club ties to mark his great support for that club and his passion for the game. He left an estate of £665,787.
HUGHES, THOMAS (Glan Pherath; 1803 - 1898), Calvinistic Methodist minister Association in September 1842. About 1864 he went to live to Penmorfa, Caernarfonshire, and, in 1883, to his daughter in Holyhead, where he died 5 August 1898. At the age of ninety-five he was a link with the past; he had heard John Evans of Bala (1723 - 1817) preaching; thus two lives bridged the greater part of two centuries. HUGHES, THOMAS JONES (1822 - 1891), cleric and grammarian Llanfaes, Anglesey, and, in July 1850, he went as curate to Northop, Flintshire. From there he was preferred, in August 1860, to the vicarage of Llanasa, and he spent ten years there, before moving to Llanfair-Dyffryn-Clwyd. HUGHES, WILLIAM (1849 - 1920), cleric and author Born 11 February 1849 at Bangor, son of David Hughes, master mariner, and Elizabeth his wife. Educated at S. HUGHES, WILLIAM ROGER (1898 - 1958), cleric and poet of the Powys eisteddfod in 1930, and on more than one occasion came near to winning the national eisteddfod chair. In 1932 he published a small collection of his poems under the title Cerddi Offeiriad, containing two eisteddfodic poems and a number of lyrics which have the merit of being less subjective than many comparable poems of the period. HUGHES, MARGARET (Leila Megáne; 1891 - 1960), singer Born in Bethesda, Caernarfonshire, 5 April 1891, one of the ten children of Thomas Jones, a member of the Caernarfonshire police force, and Jane Phillip (née Owen) his wife. In 1894 the family moved to Pwllheli but her mother died when she was 7 years old. Her father sacrificed much to give her a musical education. She had singing lessons for a period with John Williams, conductor of Caernarfon
HUMPHREYS, HUGH (1817 - 1896), printer and publisher . He took a prominent part in the life of the town and was mayor in 1876-7. He was a local preacher among the Wesleyans. Politically he was a Conservative. He married 5 June 1845, a Cornishwoman, Mary Crane Davy, daughter of captain Davy, Llandudno, an engineer; died 2 May 1896, and was buried at Llanbeblig.
