SAMWELL, DAVID (1751 - 1798), naval surgeon and poet Born 15 October, and christened 2 November 1751, son of William Samuel, vicar of Nantglyn, Denbighshire - he was, therefore, grandson of Edward Samuel, of Betws Gwerfil Goch and Llangar. Details of his youth are not known but it seems evident from his work and interests that he received a good education. SANDBROOK, JOHN ARTHUR (1876 - 1942), journalist Born at Swansea, 3 May 1876, second son of Thomas Sandbrook and his wife Harriet Sarah (née Lotherington). He was educated at Swansea grammar school and became an outstanding personality in British journalism. He began his journalistic career at Swansea in 1892, becoming chief assistant editor of The Western Mail after serving in the Boer War (1899-1902) when he was awarded the Queen's Medal with
SANKEY, JOHN (BARON SANKEY, VISCOUNT SANKEY of Moreton), (1866 - 1948), lawyer Born at Moreton, Gloucester, 26 October 1866, son of Thomas and Catalina Sankey. Educated at Lancing and at Jesus College, Oxford, he was called to the Bar in 1892, became a King's Counsel in 1909, was appointed a judge of the High Court in 1914, and a Lord of Appeal in 1928. In 1929 he became Lord Chancellor in the second Labour Government, and retained this office until 1935. He was chairman of
SAUNDERS, DAVID (Dafydd Glan Teifi; 1769 - 1840), Baptist minister, poet, and writer Morgan and Mary Evans; and his niece Elinor Lloyd. Saunders is best remembered for his literary work. SAUNDERS, ERASMUS (1670 - 1724), divine inscription in Welsh : ' Aros a Llwydda.' He supported the S.P.C.K. and helped financially (through paying for fifty copies) and in other ways in the publication of its edition of the Welsh Bible. He published several sermons, one of which, on ' Household Government,' was translated into Welsh by Samuel Williams. SAUNDERS, EVAN (d. 1742), deacon with Zecharias Thomas and David Davies in the spring of 1771. His ministry, however, was not a complete success. He so lost his popularity among the members of Bethel, Caeo, that he was obliged to confine his activities to the other branches, and eventually adhered to the General Baptists, although it is not recorded that he accepted pastoral charge. SAUNDERS, WILLIAM (1806 - 1851), poet and writer Born 17 January 1806 in Gwarcwm, Llanllwni, Carmarthenshire, son of Evan Saunders, farmer. After receiving education at the Castellhywel school and at Carmarthen grammar school he was apprenticed as a printer. He worked for Samuel Williams, printer, Aberystwyth, and during that period became prominent as a poet, winning prizes at eisteddfodau held in Carmarthen and elsewhere on such subjects as
SAUNDERS, WILLIAM (1871 - 1950), minister (B) and educationalist Born 24 May 1871 son of Thomas Saunders and Ann (née Thomas), 5 John St., Aberdare, but the family soon moved to Abercwmboi where his maternal grandfather was a leading member with the Baptists, and he was baptized there in 1883. SAUNDERSON, ROBERT (1780 - 1863), printer and publisher He served his apprenticeship at Liverpool but afterwards went to the printing-office at Chester which printed Welsh books for Thomas Jones (1756 - 1820) and Thomas Charles - see under John Humphreys (1734? - 1829).
