HYWEL ap GRUFFYDD ap IORWERTH
(fl. c. 1300-1340)
According to a story recorded by Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt about 1650, Hywel ap
Gruffydd
ap Iorwerth was descended from Hwfa ap Cynddelw, founder of one of the so-called 'Fifteen Tribes.' His mother was said to have nursed Edward II after his birth at Caernarvon in 1284; as a result, Hywel enjoyed the favour of the king and was knighted by him. He was a man of great physical strength, able to

His only remaining work consists of the two awdlau in praise of Owain (Goch) ap

IESTYN ap GWRGANT
(fl. c. 1081-1093), last independent ruler of Glamorgan
Son of Gwrgant ab Ithel. Little is known with certainty about him. Cardiff seems to have been his seat of government, but the extent of his territory is unknown. He cannot have become supreme in Glamorgan until 1081, when Caradog ap
Gruffydd
, who ruled Glamorgan from c. 1075, was slain. In 1080, Iestyn was sufficiently insignificant to appear as a minor witness attesting a grant of land made to

IEUAN ap RHYDDERCH ap IEUAN LLWYD
(fl. 1430-1470), gentleman and poet
Son of Rhydderch ap Ieuan Llwyd of Rhydderch Park, in the parish of Lanbadarn Odyn, a wealthy landowner who held office under the Crown in 1387. According to Dwnn, i, 28, the mother of ' Ieuan ap Rhydderch ab Ieuan Llwyd y prydydd ' was Annes, daughter of Gwilym ap Philip ab Elidir. But Dwnn, i, 45, 85, states that Rhydderch ap Ieuan Llwyd married twice, (1) ' Marged ferch

IFOR BACH
(fl. 1158), lord of Senghenydd
dead of night he removed William, earl of Gloucester, Hawise his wife, and Robert their son to his wooded fastnesses, refusing to release them until William had restored the lands filched from him and had bestowed upon him additional territory by way of compensation. He married Nest, sister says ' Brut y Saeson,' to the 'lord' Rhys. He was succeeded (before 1170) by his son
Gruffydd

IOLO GOCH
(c. 1320 - c. 1398), poet
to Iolo in the manuscripts the oldest which can be dated is the awdl to Dafydd ap Bleddyn, bishop of St Asaph from 1314 to 1346, and one of the latest is the cywydd to Ieuan Trevor II, bishop of St Asaph, composed, in all probability, in 1397. Between these two poles we can trace the following cywyddau written by him: panegyric upon Edward III, end of 1347; elegy upon Sir Rhys ap

ITHEL DDU
(fl. second half of 14th century), poet
rather a quasi-squire, a mighty hunter and a boon companion (according to Iolo), and like the rest of his class a patron of bards. It was by his command (says Iolo) that Iolo Goch composed the very scurrilous lampoon, printed by Charles Ashton in his edition of Iolo (no. xl), upon the mother of the poet
