PARRY, JOHN
(The Blind Harpist; 1710? - 1782), harpist and publisher of music
Born at Bryn Cynan, near Nevin, Caernarfonshire, c. 1710. Thomas Price (Carnhuanawc) says that his harp teacher was Robert Parry, Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire; Edward
Jones
(Bardd y Brenin) says that he received lessons from Stephen Shôn
Jones
, Penrhyndeudraeth. He became one of the best harpists in the kingdom and took part at concerts given in London, Cambridge, Oxford, and Dublin. He was family
PARRY, JOHN
(1789 - 1868), stonemason and musician
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 12 September 1846. A daughter and two other sons soon followed. John and Mary Parry, with their two youngest sons William and Caleb, emigrated on the Buena Vista in 1849 as part of the 249-strong group of Welsh Mormon Saints under the leadership of Captain Dan
Jones
. On arriving in New Orleans they took passage on a steamboat up the Mississippi and
PARRY, JOSHUA
(1719 - 1776), Nonconformist minister, and writer
was a literary (and a social) figure, rather than a theologian, and Edmund
Jones
in 1770 speaks slightingly of him. He is noticed in D.N.B., in an article based mainly on the Memoir (1872) written by his grandson Charles Henry Parry. Joshua Parry had notable descendants. His eldest son, CALEB HILLIER PARRY (1755 - 1822), was a physician of great repute at Bath [he is repeatedly mentioned in Jane
PARRY, OWEN HENRY
(1912 - 1956), jazz musician
of the district's brass bands. He was a member of St. Mary's Church choir, but was intent on playing instruments. He soon became adept at playing the tenor horn, flügel horn, cornet, violin as well as drums. He mastered the saxophone and was said to be Wales ' champion player. He was an expert clarinettist - his favourite instrument - and was taught initially by Francis
Jones
(1904 - 1986) of Port
PARRY, ROBERT
(fl. 1810-1863), poet
Born probably at Llanbryn-mair, son of Robert Parry, curate of that parish, and Mary, his wife, daughter of John
Jones
of Esgair Ifan. While he was still a small child his father was given the living of Eglwys-bach, Denbighshire (1810-26) and the family went to live in that place (Thomas, A History of the Diocese of St. Asaph, ii, 311). He himself had originally intended to take orders, and was

(1908 - 1975), minister (Cong.) and school teacher
College and the University College, Bangor, where one of his college contemporaries comented how they played with his initials - R.I.P.; 'He was', he said, 'somewhat of a Rip-van-Winkle, and it was wished that he would Rest in Peace!' He graduated with first-class Honours in History in 1929. He won the Robert
Jones
Scholarship which enabled him for two years to undertake research work taking as his
PARRY, ROBERT WILLIAMS
(1884 - 1956), poet, university lecturer

Jones
('Hywel Cefni'), a shopkeeper, both of whom competed regularly at local eisteddfodau and published their successful englynion in periodicals, especially Y Geninen. As early as 1906 Williams Parry wrote an awdl on ' Dechrau Haf ' for an eisteddfod at Ffestiniog. In 1907 he was a competitor for the chair at
PARRY, Sir THOMAS
(1904 - 1985), scholar, Librarian of the National Library of Wales, University Principal, poet
of both Williams Parry and Parry-Williams : together they formed a notable trinity in twentieth-century Welsh literary history and scholarship. From the Infants' School in Carmel he went to Penfforddelen elementary school, which John William
Jones
(later John Gwilym
Jones
, the playwright and literary critic) also attended; they became lifelong friends. From there Thomas Parry went to the County
PARRY, THOMAS
(d. 1709), minister with the Particular Baptists
friendship with Vavasor Powell, but they do not rest on very good evidence. He is said also to have acted as pastor of the Baptists of north Breeknock and western Radnor, but it must be remembered that most of them were Arminians, and that Parry was a strict Calvinist. He is hardly ever referred to without a tag of verse comparing him most favourably as a preacher with Alexander
Griffith
, vicar of Glasbury.
PARRY, WILLIAM
(1719 - 1775?), civil servant, secretary of the first Cymmrodorion Society
Born in 1719, fourth son of John Parry of Gwredog, Anglesey (of the family of Pen-dref, Rhodogeidio, near Llannerch-y-medd - see J. E.
Griffith
, Pedigrees, 346), and his wife, Elizabeth (Thomas), of Trefor in Llansadwrn. The Morris brothers call him 'kinsman' (câr); proof of such relationship has not been found, but it is odd how closely Parry's fortunes (in the period during which we know
PARRY-WILLIAMS, AMY
(1910 - 1988), singer and author
Born 18 December 1910 in Pontyberem, Carmarthenshire, the eldest of the three children of Lewis Thomas and his wife Mary Emiah (née
Jones
). Though registered as Emiah Jane, she was known throughout her life as Amy. Educated at Pontyberem school, Llanelli Girls' Grammar School, and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where she graduated in 1932 with first class honours in Welsh, she
PARRY-WILLIAMS, HENRY
(1858 - 1925), schoolmaster and poet
on for five years as a pupil-teacher. He then attended Holt Academy under James Oliver
Jones
. He spent the last four months of 1876 as a temporary teacher at Loveston school, near Narberth, Pembrokeshire. In 1877 he entered Bangor Normal College, and on completing the course in 1879 he was appointed schoolmaster at Rhyd-ddu, where he remained until his retirement in 1923. Parry-Williams's poetry
