Born 23 April 1881 in Bigyn Road, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, son of Thomas and Ann Thomas. The family moved to Pontarddulais where he attended the local school before beginning to work in the tin industry. Born 17 September 1814 in Llangynog toll-house, Montgomeryshire, the son of Edward Thomas (of Nantlle Vale), quarryman, and

(Morris), his wife. Joseph had very little schooling before he was sent to work in the quarry. He became keenly interested in the temperance movement, and lectured on this subject in various places. Towards the end of 1840, Lewis Edwards heard him speaking at a

Born 8 July 1874, in Talysarn, Dyffryn Nantlle, Caernarfonshire, the son of Robert Thomas, quarryman, and his wife. The father died when the Nantlle lake burst its banks, and 8 workmen were killed.
