Born 16 February 1842 at Gwyngyll, Upper Corris, Meironnydd, son of Richard Roberts, stonemason (member of a family called Ffowc, farmers of Plas Meifod, Henllan, Denbighshire) and his wife

went to Aberdare to edit Y Gwladgarwr, and, the next year, he married

Richards, Aberystwyth. Ieuan Gwyllt began to compose music when he was quite young; a hymn-tune by him, 'Hafilah,' was published in November 1839 in Yr Athraw. In 1852 he published Blodau Cerdd which contained lessons in music together with hymn-tunes which, like 'Hafilah,' were imitations of the poorer kind of English hymn

Roberts. He attended the village school until he was 13 and, two years later, began to receive instruction from Thomas Jones, Congregational minister, Denbigh. He was taught music by Thomas Daniel, Henllan; he also studied books on music. He collected a large number of hymn-tunes that were used at times of religious revival or

1873 he became pastor at Trefriw, was ordained in 1874, and in the same year married Ann

(1846 - 1910) of Castellgoed in Eifionydd. In 1879 he was called to Tabernacle Calvinistic Methodist church at Portmadoc, and remained there till his retirement in 1909. ROBERTS, PETER
(fl. 1578-1646), attorney and chronicler
Born 2 February 1577/1578, son of Robert ap Hywel ap Rhys, of Bron-yr-wylfa, near S. Asaph, and his wife Agnes - a Griffith of Gwern-eigron; he probably went to S. Asaph cathedral school. By 1599 he was notary public at S. Asaph, and in 1624 (30 June) he was appointed proctor in the bishop's court. In 1606 he married

ROBERTS, RICHARD
(1769 - 1855), harpist
, Caernarfonshire. He became blind at the age of 8, following an attack of smallpox. Taught to play the harp by the famous harpist William

('Wil Penmorfa'), he became one of the most accomplished players on the triple harp in his period. He won the silver harp offered at the Wrexham eisteddfod of 1820, and the gold harp at the Denbigh eisteddfod of 1828. He adjudicated much - e.g. at the Abergavenny
