MATHEW
family Castell y Mynach,
descended the lines of Llandaff and Radyr frequently connected by inter-marriage. The influence of the stock developed after Bosworth under the protection of Sir
Rhys
ap
Thomas, who married Janet Mathew. It declined after the death, in 1557, of Sir GEORGE MATHEW of Radyr, M.P., and sheriff. Other considerable figures in the political life of Glamorgan were the brothers Sir DAVID MATHEW of St. Fagans (died
MATHEW ap LLYWELYN GOCH
(fl. middle of the 16th century), poet
At least two of his poems survive, addressed to members of North Wales families - Wiliam SiƓn of Penarth, and Oliver

MATTAN, MAHMOOD HUSSEIN
(1923 - 1952), seaman and victim of injustice
City Police. In his summing up, Mattan's own defence barrister Mr
Rhys
-Roberts attempted to explain his client's behaviour but in doing so dehumanised him by describing him as a 'half child of nature, a semi-civilized savage'. After just three days the jury returned a verdict of guilty. Mattan had insisted on his innocence throughout the case, and now put all his hopes into trying to get a last

Elise (died 1575) of Clenennau, a member of an old Caernarvonshire family which, in the course of the last century had accumulated the most extensive and compact freehold estate in south Caernarvonshire, centred on the manor house of Clenennau (built c. 1550) and extending into Anglesey and Merioneth. Maurice, the first of the family to adopt the English form of

GWALCHMAI ap MEILYR
MEILYR BRYDYDD
(fl. c . 1100-1137), chief court-poet
to Gruffudd
ap
Cynan at Aberffraw. He is considered the earliest of the 'Gogynfeirdd.' Meilyr, and Gwalchmai (his son), and his grand-children, appear to be the likeliest known instance in Wales of a line of hereditary poets, as was usual in Ireland, holding land in return for their eulogies of a particular line of rulers. Trefeilyr and Trewalchmai remain as place-names in Anglesey. Sir J. Morris
MEREDITH, JOHN ELLIS
(1904 - 1981), minister (Presbyterian Church of Wales) and author

MEREDITH, RICHARD
(d. 1597), bishop of Leighlin, Ireland
Born in Denbighshire, son, it is said, of one Robert Meredith
ap
Gronw and Margaret, daughter of William John
ap
Gronw. It is possible that he was of the same stock as the Merediths of Stansty. He was probably the Richard Meredith who graduated B.A. at Jesus College, 4 March 1572/3, but it is quite certain that he became M.A. of the same college in 1575. He became chaplain to Sir John Perrot

MERFYN FRYCH
(d. 844), king of Gwynedd
son of Gwriad, probably a Manx chieftain and a reputed descendant of Llywarch Hen, by Ethyllt, a princess of Gwynedd. On the death, in 825, of Hywel
ap
Rhodri Molwynog, his mother's uncle, he became king in Anglesey, and later, on the death of Hywel
ap
Caradog, appears to have acquired the kingship of the adjacent mainland cantrefs. Thus were united the inheritances of the last direct descendants
